View Full Version : Texturing a ice planet?

i got my texture setup and stuff and i am wondering what would be the best methoid to make it look like a ice planet other than it being white/bluish.

if anyone seen the europa pictures (a moon of juper i think) but anyway its an ice cube planet :)

anyway i have seen several pictures and noticed that when juper wasn't in say the background behide the camera the planet took an sort of whiteish apparance but when juper was say behide the camera it would sort of take a ogranish colour from juper.


and has anyone seen the planet hoth from "empire strikes back"


that's how my ice planet looks sort of like hoth and i'm wondering how i should shade it. like an normal planet like in hoth or more of a say ice planet with mostly smooth and shiney surface like europa?

and what would be say the best methoid of doing this.

spec on the render.

enchanced low AA
and raytrace, all option turned on. (using lightwave 7.0)

anyway if any one got any c&c on my texture i'm still not happy with it i think i got a decent look but it still dosen't have the feeling of a true ice planet.

btw i know the model's not that high polygons u can tell by looking at the edge i'll make a higher polygon sphere later with the same size and everything. never did notice this untill now cos i wasn't useing AA and also using a 640x480 sized image for fast rendering.

any sugrestion or comment would be welcomed.

No offense, but it doesn't look anything like Europa ;)

There are lots of references of ice planets..right here on Earth ;) Like...Antartica http://www-istp.gsfc.nasa.gov/istp/outreach/images/Earth/antarctica.jpg

Here's a procedural way of doing the texture http://www.nawyecky.com/tuts/tut-me.htm It's for max, but you should be able to do the same basic idea in lightwave.

heh ho offense taken :)

i recolized that it doesen';t look like europa, i was sort of trying for a hoth (From Empires strikes back) look. on the first planet, then the second one which i haven't finished i was trying for a sort of europa look.

and thanks for the reference and the link to the tutorial its for a tree :) but it should do the trick :) thanks

maybe some nitrogen gas around the planet surface will help

Yeah, an atmosphere would be great :thumbsup:

Also, no planet should have a single, all-covering landmass such as this. Especially if it is an ice-planet :p There should be land and sea areas, even if the sea is frozen over, it would still look a little different to the land mass :)
