View Full Version : DVD -> Film ?
free4dom 04-21-2004, 08:05 AM Hi
I am an architect and we made a movie of a big project.
It was rendered and then put together at a DVD pal resolution.
Now we will show the movie on a big theatre screen.
The question is will the DVD resolution not be too blury when shown on a huge screen ?
Is there any way to enhance the resolution and crisp the image a little bit without having to recalculate everything at 1k or 2k ?
If we have indeed to work with 1k or 2k, or any other HD resolution, should we need also special hardware (matrox rt.100 ?)
Thanks for helping!

First question, how big is the screen you want to present it on?

Well...there's no way you'll be able to resize a PAL res video to 2k without major blur...so either forfeit (sp?) crisp quality or re-do at a higher res methinks.

Hi
Screen will be around 15m wide i think.
If i re-render the whole stuff, which resolution should i work with ?
I started to use hdtv 720p. Is it good enough ?
Problem if i go higher is disk space and ofcourse i will have to buy some prof video card (rt...)
thxs!

The problem with taking the film transfer from the DVD is that on top of everything else, the footage has gone through another lossy compresion to get it to MPEG-2, and depending on what data rate the compressor was using, the result will range from bad to unusable.
Go back to your source footage, which is the 'cleanest' copy.
You do not need HD to get an acceptable cinema transfer, I have seen excellent results from Betacam SP, and even miniDV will give a watchable image, although a little flat and jagged. If you shot on DigiBeta you're laughing.
Without knowing what format you're using it's impossible to say much more, but here is not the place to ask... phone up the transfer house you intend to use and ask them! They will have samples of all the different results from different media, and can advise you on the best delivery format.

Well...i started to render the sequences in 1280x720.
Which is also quite good for the project as it had a lot of small facade details that dissapeared in the dvd resolution.
at around 3 min / image, and quite some computers in the office, i can manage to re-render the whole thing at night, when nobody is there.
But thanks anyway for the info.
