Gah. For some reason I have none of the mR nodes that's supposed to pop up when you set the environment variable MAYA_MRFM_SHOW_CUSTOM_SHADERS to 1.

If I remove the entry, the bar "Create mental ray Nodes" dissapears from the Hypershade. Enable it, and it reappears. So far so good. But the group is empty! There are no nodes under Materials, Shadow Shaders, Photon Emitters, etc. etc. Nothing, zip, zilch.

I've been googling/CGTalking/Highend'ing around to no avail. Can someone please point me in the right direction? I'm hoping I've just overlooked something simple here..

May I enlist the aid of a friendly soul out there?

If you could please paste what Maya outputs to the Script Editor and Output Window upon startup that'd be very appriciated.
I'm.. not sure without comparing to a functional installation, but it could be that my Maya isn't executing the maya.rayrc file properly.

Anyway, just the content of those two windows, that'd be great.

Is the mr plugin loaded?

Holy ship, I solved it. Glee and jubilations.

Yeah CIM, it was loaded alright. mR itself worked, but I couldn't access the custom shaders. The custom shader groups were empty.

But I've just managed to fix the darn bugger. It turns out I had some plugins in my local pluginsfolder that were already present in my shared pluginsfolder. Maya started up without any warnings, the Plugin Manager simply reported the extraneous plugins as not loaded.

So I went ahead and fixed it, and for whatever reason the custom shaders list is now fully populated. In a million years I wouldn't've guessed that solution. Hooray for blind luck I suppose.
