Hey...I have a surface i need to cover with a grassy desert type texture. (think arizona desert) The surface is quite large (about 7 acres or so), so I'm really wondering how this can be done in detail w/o massive tiling.

i'm trying to do this in Cinema4D and photoshop.

Can i create a large base texture, lay it on the surface, and then blend other textures in layers on the surface? I don't know how this can be done, but if anyone knows if it can, could you let me know how to do it?

Thank you.

Yeah, I know how this can be done, though it might not be exactly what you're after.

I use DEM images and then reduce them to 16 colors.

Then I flood fill each contour with an appropriate image for the elevation.

For detail, I alpha blend detail textures over it (I create irregular blend imagery by using a feathered selection rectangle in a aerial photo, etc.) Here are what my results look like.
