holy sweetness, that is awesome. :)
only thing that seems to detract from the realism of the piece was when the dust cloud was coming towards the camera. the dust doesn't seem very dusty right now. i'm not entirely sure how to describe it constructively. it might be the color, or the density...
anyways, awesome job!

If your using afterburn, try to get some shading on the dust. Right now it looks like it isn't using any light source to cast shadows so it seems pretty dull all over. I think some shading and shadows would really pick up the way it looks.

WOW great effect! I cant' wait to see the finished one.
Aside from the above comments, the shock wave needs a bit of work as well. When it goes over the water it would turn up quite a wave. Plus it needs to be composted a little better; it goes over a few buildings when I'm assuming it's on the ground. I would assume some of the buildings would begin to fall right after the shock hit them as well.
Over all, its well on it's way to being an unbelievably shocking effect!

The dust clouds don't appear to be casting shadows and/or there is not enough variation in them to suggest different densities through out the layers.
Kind as if you "toon'ed" the shaders for the dust.

thanks all for your great comments
ntanium: Yep I'm using afterburn and it takes so long to render.
I agree it needs more shading. There is a light source casting shadows, but its not very noticeable. I will fix this so doesn't seem so dull.
Zinge: The shockwave would affect the water, adding this to my to-do list.
The shock wave does go over a few lower to the ground buildings, I did this so the shockwave would be more noticeable coming through the city. I will have look at this however and see if I can improve it.
I agree with you that some buildings should be affected by the shock wave and begin to fall right after it hits them.
slaughters : thanks, I will now go back add a bit more variation to the dirt wave and try and get rid of that "tooned" look.
I'm also working on a helicopter that gets caught up in the mess, I'm currently adding details to the model now. Should be finish soon.
