This is the angel body without the mechanical wings

Hi everyone. Im a first time poster and a looong time lurker here. This is my first contribution ever to a cgtalkchallenge.

Ok the idea is a fallen angel that has cut off her wings and then defies her God by attaching mechanical wings instead.

heres some wip's of the wing(s):

http://trenox.junkworks.org/dumps/fallen_angel/Wing01.jpg

http://trenox.junkworks.org/dumps/fallen_angel/Wing02.jpg

I wanted the wings to look square and heavy, as opposed to a more obvious sleek design, to enhance the contrast between the mechanical and the flesh.

My biggest problem right now would be the hair for the angel. Right now her hand is a little messed up due to the boning process i used to pose the hand. Will need alot of cleanup. Basically all the modelling is still very WIP.

Cheers everyone! :wip:

It's looking nice.

Just a warning (unofficial and all) But I believe you need to submit your sketches and concept drawings before the modeling phase. If you don't have them I think you can be disqualified???

If I am wrong, I am sorry to scare you, but I just looked through the FAQs last night...so my memory is a little better than usual.

Thanks for reminding me :)

Its just that my concepts always are so rough that i dont like showing them too much

A very rough concept sketch

Heres the knife so far. I dont want to make overkill detail on it when it probably will be very small in the final picture

Trenox

Heres a composite test to find the right pose. I twisted her body a little so you'll get a better look at the wings attachement. I will add lots more pipes and wires there later + blood and some feathers.

Comments and critique is very welcome! :wavey:

Looks promising. I like the idea, but is it supposed to be a joke/funny image in the end? Given the attitude she has with the fu-finger and smile suggests that she is a bit of a hoodlum, instead of perhaps just defying god with an expression of rage. Is any of this making any sense?

I'd leave out the fingering gesture =) I believe the image would gain more credit without it.

Apart from that, looking forward to seeing some progress on the figure and the skinning. And, I trust, a fancy matte painting for the background? =)

Keep it up.

Trenox
04-21-2004, 09:11 PM
Thanks mate, its nice with a bit of feedback in here ;)

Well i know that its maybe not the most subtle thing in the world to 'give god the finger', but i personally like it as a contrast - whats the most unlikely thing an angel will do ?

I also think that it makes people think more about her motivation when they see her with that finger, instead of just standing in a cool pose - so i'll definitely keep the finger even if I'll lose some votes ;D

I never thought of the image as "funny" in that sense, but i guess it could also be that - I sure don't mind :)

I also have an idea for the background, but I dont want to make it too fancy. I still want to keep the attention on the angel.

Trenox
04-23-2004, 11:16 AM
Ok heres a minor update just to show what i have in mind for the background. This is just to give an idea - it will probably all be changed, and I will also darken the backgroundstuff more, so it doesnt take as much focus from the character as its doing now.

I dont want the background to associate "steam punk" so there should be alot more pipes and techstuff.

The far background will probably feature some painted clouds - just very subtle stuff.

http://trenox.junkworks.org/dumps/fallen_angel/Background01.jpg

I also had this idea of putting a cut off (feathered) wing on the ground, but this could maybe take too much precious time.

Looking good, bro! Keep on going :)

Her hip however seems to connect quite high? Seems a little odd from that angle - makes her torso look a little short, judging from where the hip kinda ends.

pretty good looking character...

a bit insolent!

Ok 'ere we go again.. Still lots of proportions to be fixed and her pose is totally temp. im playing with the idea of her hair being cut off and in a mess.

Ok heres an update with some tweaks on the angel and an early stage of the final background.

http://trenox.junkworks.org/dumps/fallen_angel/Angel05.jpg

some comments would be nice :D

Trenox
05-19-2004, 01:52 PM
I decided to post this overview of what i plan to tweak and add. In general i want to keep the whole background very low contrast so it doesnt take away too much attention. No lights or anything like that. I did some tests with the cut off wing, and i think it will take too much effort to build it to a high enough quality - would also maybe ruin the composition a little. Instead im sort of insinuating whats going on (notice the 3 positions that will have blood on them). The following is just a quick photoshop ontop of the previous render.

http://trenox.junkworks.org/dumps/fallen_angel/wipoverview01.jpg

No comments ?

henrikbc

Head proportions are still off. Head aswell as right hand is too big. Make sure you get the proportions and the anatomy on the angel as near perfect as you can, because she's the most critical part of the image. Not only because of subject matter, but because humans know how humans look. =)

Looking forward to seeing some feathers very soon, aswell as hair. Pretty soon, right? *nudge*

Trenox
05-19-2004, 02:34 PM
yeah your ofcourse right, but i just spend so much time on the head/hands that its a shame to shrink them (<- bad excuse) :D

hope to update soon

henrikbc
05-19-2004, 02:39 PM
Hehe.. well if that's the case, you should probably have chosen a _slightly_ different camera angle =) the pov from god perhaps?

In any case, I trust you will make this image stand the scrutiny of high resolution rendering so the detail on the head/hands can still be seen in the final image. ;)

Another small update. Still not made the proportion tweaks, but only added some detail and lightning stuff.

Hein: yeah will be rendered highres for final. The camera angle is pretty fixed though. :)

Saschi: thx! =)

Okay this is my modelling milestone so far. I will now put my effort into textures, but i will probably still make some modellingtweaks during that process.

hey great modelling work, I like the angel body and well the pose is really comic, haha...

the light looks really cool, but probably with some texture they you will obtain some more fx at your work !

extra + congrats...

jddog: thx a bunch =)

Okay heres the first textureiteration of the background. The blood on the floor is mainly just for reference right now. I think i will also add small pieces of pebble/garbage on the floor. I also need to figure out what i want the pipe on the floor to end with.

hope you guys like it :D

Thx alot guys :bounce:

Heres a test i did where i added some color and levelstuff in photoshop. I know that its too early, but i just couldnt help myself. Im not even sure that this is direction i want yet, but its just so fun do play with the different layersettings and see what you'll get. Still need to do tweaks to overall proportion, hair, knees and feet + some more backgroundstuff. Also the wings dont have any textures yet. Ill also add more blood, cut off hair and feathers.

Keep it up, swinger.

Trenox
05-25-2004, 09:46 PM
yes still have to tweak the body and pose.. really hate that :P

And the textures on the wings are giving me a hard time also - but im confident that ill make it to the end now, and thats really nice motivation. unless i get some crazy idea for the far background.. maybe a quick matte or something like that. but it will be the last thing for sure, since i dont think its absolutely necessary.

thx for the comments! - they are really hard to get here  maybe i need to post more in other ppl's threads :D

henrikbc
05-25-2004, 10:05 PM
..or maybe you should have posed her, so that her chest was exposed directly to camera, but that's just a hunch. :)

Regardless, keep at it!

this is very nice Søren. i like the colourscheme and both texturing and modeling is very nice.

one thing though.

the feet are wrong..... and the highlight on the foot emphasises it... I think your model would look better if you adjusted your lightsource so that the light didnt hit the foot.

other then that... its a very nice contribution.

ill join in later.... :-)

Hi Trenox,

don't be angry, but I can't find failures so far....maybe some cool background ...hmmm and it could be better if she pulls her right knee in direction to her body. This would give her more dynamic imho.
...but sorry, thats all - this work is simply great....sorry,man;)

...you will make it, I know that...:wip:

light milestone: Okay a very light update, but i sort of did all the lightning while i did the rest of the scene, so i basically just made some tweaks and added some volumelight.

EDIT: ehrm i think ive uploaded a version without the vollight and only a noisy background.. oh man im getting old :surprised

bo: Damn you spotted it :P yeah the feets give me some issues, that i hope i have time and patience to fix.. and i know i should redo them, but theres just so much to do. But thx for the encouragement =)

Saschi: thx man :) ill try and improve her pose :D

Heino: nope, no cheapshots ;)

Heres another post variation i played with:

Hi,

I like your last render, the ligthing is very good.
If i can say something, for me, the gesture of the right hand is too much.

bo degn
the feet are wrong..... and the highlight on the foot emphasises it... I think your model would look better if you adjusted your lightsource so that the light didnt hit the foot.

true, the light is so hight on the feet that make it too important in the picture.

It's a good work, a little background and it will be well done!!

henrikbc

I suggest you strike her in the *final* pose, before dwindling into nitpicking the light on her. You can't hold out on that forever you know.. =)

Keep it up.

Trenox
06-04-2004, 07:08 PM
Essencedesign: thx alot man!

Heino: I know I know.. gotta make cool pose soon! :D

DaVee: thx! I have sadly no intention of changing her gesture - its too important for the picture.

Ok new feet: http://trenox.junkworks.org/dumps/fallen_angel/Feet01.jpg

I know they arent that sensual and angelic (i used my own ugly plates as ref :surprised ) - but if i had to redo them from scratch i wanted to have some fun also.

Thx for comments!

Heres a new comp test. Trying different color-approaches. Also worked on some issues with pose and proportion. My next task is to make it more obvious how the wing is attached. Its a little messy now.

hope you like it =)

Protoz
06-08-2004, 09:50 PM
The new pose looks MUCH more natural. The old pose looked like she was going to fall off the edge.

good luck!

henrikbc
06-09-2004, 10:16 AM
Better indeed, but you can do even better. Try standing in that pose yourself; her right shoulder should be pushed further forward - i know the wings has counterweight, but this would look more natural. Don't be affraid to make her pose a bit extreme, afterall she's defying god..

And look out for parts of her body that should flex/bulge. Her buttocks for instance. Right now they're symmetrical, which is unlikely. Make her flex and squeeze that butt - as well as other parts of her body =)

Looks like you've seen the light though, keep it shining, camper!

Trenox
06-09-2004, 02:49 PM
Protoz: thx! yeah i should really have fixed that pose a long time ago.

Heino: heh i knew you wouldn't be satisfied :D But ill try and improve it soon, as well as fixing the last details. cant wait to finish this sucka

Everyone: thank you so much! Im trying to make an update relatively soon but i hit a problem: As you can probably see I've been very concious of the image I would make, and this gave me the opportunity to cut alot of corners (like she doesnt have eye, ear or hair on the far side of the head) and only focus on the detail that matters. The problem is that I also only worked in low res renders, and it came to my attention quite late that we have to submit a highres render. Well im not too happy with the look im having in highres. Theres alot to be fixed and i probably also have to redo/tweak some maps, that are too lowres

But i hope i can come through and submit a decent work anyway

and the good thing is that I've learned something

thx again so much for the support! :bounce:

Oh and i just wanted to post this shot of the lightning setup:

http://trenox.junkworks.org/dumps/fallen_angel/light.jpg

The omnis are alle instanced and create a subtle GI effect. I also use alot of include/exclude to control the light better. So basically my whole groupstructure is divided according to the level of control i want with light. I really prefer this method instead of relying heavily on GI/radiosity. (Big thanx to Heino in this thread for making me aware of this lightning concept)

Heres the postfx miletstone.. this is really close to the final image. I was playing with some mountains in the background, and i wanted to paint in some clouds, and a couple of birds/angels flying in the far background, but i didnt have the time to produce it in a good enough quality. Also my 1ghz wasnt too keen on too much painting in photoshop in the final resolution :p

But enough with the excuses - ill submit final today :) - are the color and lightning levels satisfying ?

Hey man, I think that we have a very similar concept - I made a winged girl too...

I really loved the way you tinted the color and added more contracity and stronger light, I think my image lackes proper lighting....

Really loved the wings too, and the background is simple but interesting at the same time.

VERY COOL ;} I just wanted to stop back and say Good Job and great work. And I understand the rough concept sketch thing, I tend to see things in my head and be able to adjust it and such, so concept sketches are more of me trying to figure the pose out after already seeing it from a bunch of different angles. There I go again, making excuses. I am shy about my work before it is finished... lol

Dutchman

07-31-2004, 11:59 AM
Thoughtcriminal: Yeah i saw that too - your image is awesome =)

Rattlesnake: Thx man!

Shinwa: Although i appreciate the exercise in making a conceptsketch i really didnt feel i needed one for this image. I do most of the "thinking" in 3d, and this image was planned out from the start (with some adjustements ofc) in my head. For some things i do make alot more sketches, and in greater detail, but this just wasnt it. For my next challenge i will probably have in mind that i have to submit concepts, and then pay greater attention to it.

Dutchman: thx :) on page 4 theres some elaboration on the lightning. But basically i used a 3point light for each major object to create more perfect rimlights - instead of just 1 3point setup for the whole thing. Include/exclude objects from light sources is really a must. - but the shadows are controlled by just a few lights - i dont want all sorts of weird shadows all over the place. So you can say that the lightning is truly unrealistic since im just bending the rules completely, but screw that =) please feel free to ask again if you have some questions i havent answered yet.

Dutchman
08-01-2004, 10:41 AM
Hey tnx Trenox! That 'tut' is really cool! Your lighting technique is really new to me, but also really cool and smart! :) In this way you'll have allot control of the lighting! And the fact you still use just some other lights for the shadow is just logical... :)

After more looking at the image I'm really sure you have a great chance to be in the best 5 images of the contest! (after voting :) )

Good luck & Greetz,

Gijs
