I'm trying to render some images to use in photoshop. But the problem is that all of the images have a backgroundcolor. If I layer them in photoshop I only want the object and not the background.

So, is there a way to render with a transparent background?

Or something equivalent to that?

in the normal case the alpha channel is switched on in the render globals. but you can take a look. its right on top of the settings. but in general if you layer the images in PS they don't recognize their alpha by default. but they all have an alpha channel in it. you can see it in the channel tab. there is the R,G,B and the Alpha one.

you can use this alpha and load it (select-load selection) in PS and then just delete this part with backspace.

better use a compositing programm. they recognize the alpha by default and layer the images with the masks.

thank, but I don't see an alpha channel. Is it only available in certain formats? like .tiff or something?

I have found it in maya, and it was indeed on, so it should probable create one, right?

Can you point me in the right direction here? thanks

yep thats right. not every image format supports alpha channels. i suggest to work with the iff or sgi format. they are the best for me. you can get plugins for PS on highend to read/write this formats.
