I was fortunate enough to do some work on this video.... Sinf got Absolution by Muse. Here is a ling to the page on my online portfolio (www.lw3d.co.uk) that shows what I did:

http://www.lw3d.co.uk/content_page_ark_muse.htm

Also on the page are the concept drawings I worked from, and some stills from the video, but it is playing quite heavily on MTV/2 & Kerrang amongst others.

You can view the MOV online at www.colonelblimp.com by going to the page for ArkVFX.

Cheers!

Really good mate!
It was a bit slow going early on, but the asteroid field and red planet segments were both excellent.
The director sure does like lens flairs though, never mind.

This is excellent stuff! Everyone should download this video to see what is possible with Lightwave.

It was a bit difficult to find the download link. I think this URL is more direct:

So the complete video was done / rendered in LW, and not only the space ship model ?

Anwyay, the ship looks sweet, reminds me of Space Above and Beyond.

Did you do the concepts as well.

You know what other tools they used for compositing etc ?

Yeah, the who video was done with LW, a healthy mixture of modelled geometry and severly good matte painting. The concepts were done by Steve Tappin and Rich Wright (Ark VFX chappies) and handed to me to make a model from. I think I manages to stay pretty faithful to the desgn :)

As for the compositing, I believe the compositing was handled with Digital Fusion and the final edit put together in Premier Pro.

My work only makes a small part of the video, but it was great to be part o fit. A friend of mine (Jamie Bubsy) built the space suit too.

Cool work man. I love your ship but want to see the bigger renders. When I click the thumbnails a new window opens but nothing loads in it. The video is great though. I love the scifi theme. Never heard Muse before but they sound a lot like Radio Head which is a good thing. Anyway, good work.

I've been working on a Lightwave music video too. Click here (http://www.sad-world.com/germany/) if you want to see some test renders. I'm making it by myself though so it's been a very slow process. Tons of fun though.

Thanks guys!

Looks cool Gabe, I seem to remember seeing some of this on the newtek forums a while back? The set is really cool :)

I'm guessing you use a Mac? The pop-up window doesn't work for safari, I need to get a newer version, but right now I need to spare all the cash I have for a forthcoming move. Soon though! I'll try and post up some bigger renders today for you :)

Cheers!

Yeah, I posted some of those a while back. I had to take a several month break on the project though. I'm back at it again now and hopefully will finish soon.

Kinding of draggin my feet now since I'm into the animating part of the project. Modeling's more my thing but I don't know any good and free animators.

Rendering the thing could take a few months though since I just have a single LW licence and haven't been able to crack the mystery of network rendering. I have 3 computers at my house that could potentially be a mini render farm but I'll be d@mned if I can get the network render deal going.

No, I just use plain old Windows 2000 with IE 6.x so I'm not sure what's going on. I noticed that the popups on this site,http://www.turboforce3d.com/, aren't working for me either. Yet the popup's I designed on this site's, photo sectionThe Punk Group (http://www.thepunkgroup.com), work fine for me. I think something's up with my computer. I reinstalled IE 6 but still having the same issue. Eh, well, go figure.

Bugger! not sure what's up with it then as far as the pop-ups go. i am gradually adding different pop-ups to my site that are Safarari/Mac compliant, so might be worth checking then to see if they work for you too :)

Cheers!

Two Thumbs Up!

Never heard of Muse before, but now I am a fan! The music video was moody and since I also have a soft spot for spaceships, I think you did a damn good job.

Thank ya!

I'm still not having any luck with your popups. Don't know why. I have Java script popup's on some site's that I designed and they work fine. Not sure what's going on.

Great work on that video, cool stuff all around! I've been somewhat of a Muse fan for years, so that makes it even better.

I wouldn't compare them with Radiohead HowardM, they're quite different especially when you listen to a whole album and not only a single piece. Overall they're a lot more energeric, especially live...

HowardM, in total I think seven people worked on it (3 of whom worked for about 2 weeks on it).

Thanks for the cool comments! BTW, there is an article on the Muse Video in the next issue of 3DWorld, so you should get a better idea of my role in the video (minor compared to the Ark guys who did a lof of modelling and all the matte painting and animation stuff).

Cheers!

Damn! I missed this thread when it was first posted so I'm chiming in now.

Just got my June copy of 3D World where this video was mentioned. Being a LW fanatic I had to take a look at the video. I've never heard of Muse before and although they're very Radiohead-esque I like what I hear. I'm going to pick (re: BUY) up their album(s).

Oh, and the video was excellent!

Sheffield-based 3D animation and pre-production specialist Ark’s music video for UK indie rockers Muse has been shortlisted in the Sound Music Video Award category of July’s Rushes Soho Shorts Festival.

The video for Muse’s Sing for Absolution single - which Ark describe as a ‘mini sci-fi disaster movie’ - is the company’s first foray into music promo-films and one of 30 pieces shortlisted by judges from over 1800 entries.

With patrons including the British Academy of Film and Television (BAFTA) and the Directors Guild of Great Britain, the Soho Shorts festival is a highlight of London’s film calendar. The judging panel is made up of professionals from the film, television, advertising, music and media industries.

“We’re delighted that our work has been shortlisted – it’s great to have such recognition from other industry professionals’, said Ark’s Steve Tappin.

Free screenings of the shortlisted films will be shown in venues throughout Soho between Saturday 31st July and Friday 6th August. The festival culminates in an awards ceremony in Leicester Square.

Ark was founded in 2003 by visual artists Greg Staples, Stephen Tappin, Andy Turner and Richard Wright.

Nice to see such recognition, I may even head down there and take some snaps of the event, I'll be sure to post if I get some decent snaps for sure...

:fingers crossed: it does well...
