Quote:
"Electronics giant Sony and another Japanese company have developed a "paper disc" that can record more than two hours of high-definition images and be destroyed with scissors for foolproof data security, officials

The 25-gigabite Blu-ray optical disc is 51 percent paper and was developed jointly with Toppan Printing Co. Ltd. of Japan.

"Since a paper disc can be cut by scissors easily, it is simple to preserve data security when disposing of the disc," Toppan managing director Hideaki Kawai said in a joint statement with Sony.

Masanobu Yamamoto, senior managing director at optical disc development division of Sony, said the firms were able to use paper in the new disc as the Blu-ray technology does not require laser light to travel through the substrate.

The technical details of how it is possible to use paper as a data storage disc would be disclosed Tuesday at a conference in Monterey, California, according to Sony.

The combination of paper material and printing technology is also expected to lead to a reduction in cost per disc and will expand usage, the two partners said. It has yet to be decided when the disc will be commercially available"

Nifty. Wonder if the data storage will be more or less vunerable than the current technology.

First there's display screen made out of paper like material, then there's DVD made of paper. I wonder if eventually the computer case will be made out of recycle paper (ie: Cardboard boxes).

Well... I guess not since it might combust into flames:D

My computer's on fire! seriously!

And hear I thought that with the new technology we were suposed to become a paperless nation :)

And I wouldnt use sisors, Id still put it through the shredder (FYI they have shredders now that will eat a CD/DVD without any problems)

Just be shure to sand the lable side :)

If you just do the clear side, it might be able to be repaired, repolished & you can get the data off the cd then :) (The lable side is Very thin, and dont take much to scratch the actual data)

"This disk will self-destruct in five seconds"-Hehehe. For those of us who are on a mission to share our graphic secrets.

This sounds like a cool way to share data.

I was in the market for paper shredders about a month ago. not much farther down the shelf was a bunch of cd shredders. It seems like spending the $60 for them would be cheaper than buying new hardware and all new media. Some of the shredders even have locknig canisters that you can feed a stack of disks into and not be able to get them back out until they are plastic "pulp"

For the ultimate in data security, I set my old CDs on a paper towel and nuke 'em for about 4 seconds in a microwave. Not only is the CD completely destroyed, I get to watch a nice little blue-spark fireworks display. Every day is the fourth of July! Well, that plus a pleasant napalm-in-the-morning sort of smell.

Seems with both agree that if you're going to destroy data, you should at least have fun doing it. :)

Sony has said nothing about the longevity of this paper DVD. Will your data still be OK in ten years? Or will dampness and mould have degraded the paper backing and made the DVD unreadable?

So how do you use the shells ?

:wip:

Brings a new meaning to _wiping_ data. Seriously, though, AOL will have a field day with these. Remember how many floppies and CDs they littered across the country? If Sony can fit that many gigs on a paper DVD, AOL will be spamming your snail-mail box with postage-stamp-sized software papers. Guys will walk out of the bathroom and have AOL software hanging from their shoe.

It would be cool thing to light cigars with.

:p

Finally "spontanious combustion" will be a valid excuse for not delivering your work/homework on time. :applause:

I wonder if this new paper DVD is absorbent? If you spill your beer on the table, can you mop it up with a paper DVD? Maybe it expands when it gets wet!

oh man i laughed so hard when i saw that post... haha... ive always wondered the same thing... stupid demolition man doesnt tell us... lol

so with this new paper disc will we have to worry about paper cuts? hey and if it does expand does that give us more room? however if it expands with beer that would probably induce loss of memory.. :p

What do you mean? If your homework happens to catch on fire, it's a valid excuse. Who turns in homework on a DVD?

According to Sony, this new paper DVD is much more flexible than the old plastic ones. That means you can bend it and put it in the back pocket of your jeans.

If you do put it in your pocket, remember to take it out again before washing your clothes. Otherwise your DVD might become a hundred balls of fluff caked onto the inside of your washing machine!

lol... everybody is just full of comments!

I used to use those AOL cds as frisbees... I guess now I can make paper airplanes.

3 sea shells = (soap, rinse, dry):D Just like a car wash.

That's what I would do anyway. I don't think other order would be as effective. Maybe the 4th for new car smell.

Hmmm. An absorbent paper DVD. That means manufacturers would be able to imbed perfumes and odors into the actual DVD.

I think I may make my own DVD showreel smell like musk! That will make any potential client / employer more likely to hire me! *

* Warning: The success of this method may depend on what gender the employer is!

not too long ago there were some stories around the net about how if a cd rotates too fast in a dvd burner it could litterally explode... it has to go VERY fast though for this to happen, and typically only happens after the cd has been spinning a very long time and has gotten very hot...

SO, next question is will these paper dvds burn up inside of your brand new blue laser burner as the laser hits them, and the rotation causes friction that warms the disk?!?!?

yeah im worried these dvd will set on fire. since this is new technology it will probably cost 100 bucks for them. so, why would i want my 100 dollar paper cd to burn?

this is what happens when there is no demand for innovation. people come up with stupid ideas. would have loved to been in the board room that day lol!

Hmmm...since someone mentioned the toilet...are these DVDs flexible enough that we will we be able to wipe our a** with them and then just flush them? Instead of hanging toilet paper on the bathroom we'd just have a nice box of these DVDs after we're through with them :D

I was just watching 'The Core' on DVD. In this movie, the computer-geek-kid is busy hacking, cracking, pirating when he gets a knock on the door from FBI agents telling him to open up.

Before he opens the door, he hits the "purge" button on all his computers and starts erasing everything to destroy the evidence.

Now, if this geek kid was smart, he'd store all his "naughty" files on Sony's new paper DVD disk media. When the cops knock on the door, all he needs to do is grab a bucket of water and throw it over his disks. The Sony paper DVDs would expand, destroying all the data and evidence.

I can see these new paper disks will be popular!
