I accidently posted it into the surfacing section

Hi there,

I'm currently experimenting with lighting with hdri,

And i was wondering:

How can i use a hdri image just for mapping and leave the background of the render blank

for example here below is there a render from suurland.com

http://www.suurland.com/image_x.php?image=images/portfolio_stills_newbeetle_vray_01.jpg

As you can see here that there a hdri image is used to reflect the lighting. but the background is left blank.

I have to mention that i use 3dsmax

it's simple.

I don't know much 3d max but I can tell ypu how I can do it in Maya.

you create a sphere an texture it with your hdri image.

And you must set his property to be seen in reflactions, reflections, and so on but you turn off the property of render it. In Maya it's primary visibility.

Hope that this help you.

 Cheers, and happy rendering !!

just as creaminds said, but in max, you'll choose the sphere, right-click and un-check visible to camera. All the proprieties of your HDR sphere will remain, but what you'll really see is your background

Suurland's render is done in VRay, which has overrides for both lighting and reflection/refraction mapping. That way you can use a grey color in the 3ds max environment color slot, and put an HDRI in the VRay Reflection/Refraction environment slot.
