In the world of rising crime rates, scientists are forced to develop a new security system. Rather than installing the system in your house or car, it would be installed in the the family pet. Not only does the system protect it's owners life but it prolongs the pets life throgh cyber machinery implanted into the animals brain(d-chip). The "D-chip" controls all the protecta equipment enabling man's best friend the ability to think and contol the optional Protecta equipment.
All it takes is a simple four number code to activate the system. It is at this moment that cute little fido turns into a super crime preventor.
He or she will be able to see at night, detect motion (thermal/seismic), mimic sounds, detain criminals, contact the authorites and much much more.

Damn it - I had that concept drawn down last week. Oh well, going to submit something soon in case it happens again.

Best of luck and welcome to the competition. Like your dog so far.

It's about time! :)

Lots of cool gadgets there. Should be fun to model all that stuff and have it come to life. Are you going for a realistic look or more of a cartoony feel?

riltis
04-19-2004, 02:06 PM
I am not really sure of the rendering technique that I am going to use for this scene. I had envisioned a really detailed cartoon style. I don't want it to look cell shaded though. I am open to any ideas you may have!

Sandpiper
04-19-2004, 02:12 PM
The reason I bring it up is you'll have to think about the fur issue and how his skin works with all these contraptions. Definitely don't do a cell shade for this. By cartoony, I mean something more playful or misproportioned compared to a real life doggie.

04-19-2004, 03:11 PM
For a cartoony look you could try and experiment with final rendering in Photoshop. Use multiple filters (like cutout) and blending modes.

riltis
04-19-2004, 03:28 PM
at133: The technique that you mention sounds very interesting. Do you have any examples that you have seen so I can visualize what you mean?

Sandpiper: I am interested in doing something with more of a cartoon feel to it. So I will use exaggerated scale and proportion for the Dog and its gadgets.

at133
04-19-2004, 03:41 PM
Nothing that I can think of right now. You can start with the cutout filter and then fade it to keep some detail and then use another filter (like noise or fresco) and fade it again.

Just a quick update on the concept. Next step is to color him in PS.

This is coming along nicely. I like the inking and I REALLY look forward to seeing the colored version in the near future. Just dive into the coloring and have fun with it!

Have you considered incorporating some 911 contacter? (My very smart wife's idea.....)

Freaking hilarious. Looks like you've got the concept wrapped up now, so let's see some modeling! Give him some emotion too. :)

Getting excited now eh? Good proxy so far....as you go along, you'll figure out where he needs adjustment as far as proportions go since you don't have a front sketch to go from. This looks good. Glad to see the progress!

A small update for the modeling. As always c&c are welcome. I decided to develop the inside of his mouth because I may want to have him growling (lips)for the final image.

Man, I haven't been getting notifications that your thread has been updating!

I hope we see all these teeth in the final image! I know how big of a pain teeth and gum modeling can be so have fun.....I would suggest hitting the rest of the face and body so you'll be able to finish the model soon and move on to texturing......less than a month left my friend! :) It's looking great and I hope you are having fun!!

Here is an update of the ears and minor adjustments to the head. My next update will be the brain and back of the head.

Finally, some machine for the flesh. As you can see I am continuing to develop from the orginal concept. I plan for the chip to look like an intel socket 7 chip. I think the hydraulic arm on the side isn't large enough so I will fix that in my next post. Next post will include the satelites and collar!

You will notice that I am adjusting the orginal concept to something I think will be much better. Before I had the satelites coming out of the brain cavity. After thinking through this idea I don't think that this will be very functional. So I developed side doors that will contain the satelite equipment. I will be placing the satelites in the next update as well as moving onto the body...Yikes the deadline is getting close!

word up riltis, glad to see you here...i was curious if that flap on the back of his head is supposed to be open all the time or not?...if not you may consider refining the connection and what the seams should look like when it's closed...looks like some of those hydraulic pieces would run into each other, keeping it from completely closing shut....in the interest of time however, that may just be something to consider for your future flaps....

best of luck... :bounce:

I was starting to wonder if anybody was out there. I hadn't recieved a response in awhile.

The "hood" for the brain cavity is indeed supposed to be closed while in action. For the purpose of this project it will remain open. My presentation idea is to show the Protecta Dog as if he were a demonstration model on the show room floor. So all doors and compartments will be set in the open position for the potential buyer to see.

I do notice the conflict in the mechanics of the hood. In an upcoming post i will make some adjustments to fix that. Thanks for the crit!

Here is an update of the Protecta-House's head. I promise I will be moving onto the body soon. 15 days man this one is going to be close.

You will notice that I added a viewing screen for our little friend and a couple of satelites. I also noticed that the satelites need some slight adjustment. I will make those adjustments for the next update.

O.K. I like the dog. If I might suggest however I think those Satelite antenna's need some work. I don't think they flow with the model to well.

Have you given anythough to incorporating those into the the ears? Got those big floppy ears hanging down just dieing to be put to some action.

The best dachshund on this contest - I like the funny ones.
The older images look better to me.
What I dislike:
The satellites (perhaps they aren't too big but rather too thick - the technical inner life should be more fragile).
I strongly dislike the "moustache hair". Perhaps in another composition of the other parts of the dachshund.

The cartoon style is unique in this contest - I think it works If you try to keep it simple.

Perhaps he should be standing at the top of some steps in front of a door. Like he's guarding it. Just standing there looking out across the yard scanning for danger to the occupants.

Congrads on finishing up, very cool concept, a bit on the lighter side compared to alot of them here, so very nice difference. I also like the final layout series of shots, it helps show all the details, which looks great. It would have been cool to see him in some setting kicking butt on an intruder. Great Job and Good Luck on the competition  it took me forever to find your post, but well worth the search......

Thanks for the compliments on the thread. I saw this competition as one to build my skillz. I learned alot with my little doggy.. Currently, I am rigging him I will post an update when I finish.

The goal is to have him standing on my back porch (photo matched shot) pointing towards the danger!

Thanks again,
