Hey all!!! I am still on schedule for a character a week .. well actually I seem to be ahead of schedule. I did this week’s character in three days… 1½ Days for modeling… ½ Day for Skeleton/Rig/Weighting/Posing and the 3rd day (today) was lighting/rendering.

Let me know what you think. Last week I really tired to match the sketch and I think I pulled it off fairly well. This week I did another “Insanely Twisted Rabbit” and I found that the sketch (much like a lot of 2d artwork) was a challenge to model. There are so many cheats you can use with a pencil!! I know now that the pose in the concept is almost physically impossible to do. I think I did pretty well on this one but I’m posting just to make sure! :0)

Oh and here are the links to the previous weeks.

And here is my character for the week of July 7 - 13.... mmm I still have time left in this week. Maybe I’ll actually take a break! What a concept!! Heh!

Thanks again to Michel Gagné for the concept sketch!

Great work on translating the sketch to 3d. Very good job. You've certainly nailed the pose, even if it's phusically impossible :)

I love your work! They have such a cool style to them and you do a perfect job of re-creating them!

Do you have a website with more samples of your work James?

iMag – Thanks!!! Aren’t you supposed to be in class? :0) Wait a sec it’s midnight…. Never mind. LoL

urgaffel – It means a lot that you say that, the last sketch from last week’s character was more to the side…. This one is at quite an angle and his head is bent, tail turned to the left and his legs are stretched out. I had to use a lot of brainwork and drawings to get an idea of what it would look like from the side/front/top etc. I think that the character itself wasn’t that complicated, the challenge was making it match the original concept. I love that challenge.

mebamonster – It is crazy.. I never thought that you could have style in modeling…. Well that was a long time ago and now I am searching the net trying to find great concepts to model from. I love Michel Gagné’s work. I am modeling from someone else’s vision more and more. If (hopefully “when”) I get into the industry I will be ready for what they throw at me. I won’t be making anything from my designs… well most likely anyway. I think it is very important that you can show a employer that you can take their vision and create it as they want to see it.

bentllama – I am working on a website… I think now that you have mentioned it I am going to buck up and get it done this weekend. I just compiled some of my older work into a video compilation and I’ll be compressing to Divx tomorrow. I have to be frank though; my work is just starting to look better. The last few weeks I have been really picking up and my speed is increasing more than I thought possible. As fast as I go I’ll have a website whipped up and I’ll be posting some of my work as well as some video. If I don’t hear from you I’ll drop you a line and spot you a link to my page. I think that I haven’t had too much interest in a website because I have been posting here and I get so much feedback, it’s great. I’m kind of spoiled that way :0) I’ll keep you posted though. Cheers

LOL, I still say it looks painted. ;)

Either way, straight render you say. That is amazing. Your ability to creat such wonderful lighting and atmosphere in a straight render is worthy of reconition alone. Bravo master artist.

Can't believe how fast you're turning these out. I think you should have spent some more time on this one though, it's not as good as last week's model.
The lighting in the second picture looks great but why are his feet glowing? (why not?)

quality is better than quantity. this model looks unfinished compared to others that you have done.

I agree.

It might look that way because the eye doesn't completely match the concept. Bigger? Crazier? That might give this guy some more personality.

Once again, m8, fantastic work.

In fact, sod it. I'm packing up and going home...

Yeah it does look sorta painted.
Looks like it might have been rendered using final gathering?? With the way the colors are reflecting off the ground and on the character...
So whats on the table for next week? Would be nice to see a character with human characteristics maybe? Just an idea...

yo james..........i like your crazy lookin dog or mouse whatever it ws.....but it was really good.........i think this one doesn't have that much details....it's more of a low poly model......i think you should make it more detailed if you not gonna use it in games....haha....and BTW i finished my full time Maya program....not XSI.......

Pinky_Powers – Master artist… mmm I kinda like the sound of that. LoL :0) I wish I could paint like that but I guess I should be happy that I can render like that. :0)

playmesumch00ns – I am haulin’ pretty fast. I am trying to get better and better. The reason I am not spending to much time on these is because I am doing as much as I can with the time given and not holding on to one project for too long. I think that if I can have a different character every week I can have many different modeling styles and work on my speed. I am very aware of the value of completing a project and I do when I need too. As for right now I’ll be seeing what I can do in a week. The feet are glowing because…. Well. … I was playing around with lighting and I had the light from under the feet and someone walked by and said “nice feet dude!”; there isn’t really a reason other than it looks cool. LoL

Jfrench and Are3D – I totally agree to what you are saying and I know that I could and probably will work more on this character. My exercises lately are to accomplish two things, One: to match the sketch of the original concept artist and Two: to make a very tight deadline and to try to hold a high quality given a small amount of resources and time. I know I could get lost in a project for months on end spending tons of time nitpicking and adding more detail to the point of completion. I think that there is a high value in that but as for right now I need to stay on track with my exercises. Thanks for pointing that out though it is a very good point that everyone should realize this. I see so many unfinished projects with no reason of why they are not. Some may not agree with my exercises but I am getting a LOT faster and my models are getting better and better. Do what works I say. :0) Cheers Jeremy and Robert.

Scott Guns – The eye needs more work, I see that now :0) I’m not sure but I think that the head needs to be turned more and more light added around the eye. I think that if I were to make the eye a slight bit bigger it would match the sketch. I don’t want to have any “freeform” modeling in this exercise. I’ll save that for the weekend and less demanding projects. :0) Thanks Scott

Bradf0rd010 – Thanks m8! Don’t pack up and go home!!! Keep working and never give up, never surrender!!!!!

OrestesMantra – 3D God? WOW!! :0) I’m just your average Joe working hard to make it somewhere. :0)

=kz= – I was trying to make the render look like a painting so I guess I succeeded! :0) There isn’t any final gathering in the scene, there is volumetrics, one light with GI, two with a slight glow, two reflectors and painted textures. As for next week it will be a surprise, I was already planning something with human characteristics. I will be spending the whole week on the next one though; it will be a lot harder than the previous models. Cheers.

blok – You forgot Twisted! LoL :0)

S E D A H – Thanks again. You liked the first version of my character.. do you mean last weeks character or the first picture of this weeks.. Just curios. I’ll me trying to keep it up as much as I can! :0) Thanks for reading my posts.

shashhh – Thanks, I’m glad you like last week’s model! I am very curious to what you mean by adding more detail. The exercise was to match the model to the sketch and I think the details are close… they could use more work as to their exactness but I am not sure where I can add detail without deviating from the concept. If there is something I missed please let me know as to the details. I am really focusing on the modeling so the texturing details I am not too picky about, more so that I am not texturing them very much.

What was your program like? A year? Just Maya? Did you use any other software? I’m just curious. I saw your reel, I liked it :0) Enjoy the weather, get down to Spanish Banks and get some sun! :0)

First, I love that rabbit thingy. Just awesome. I also love the way you carried out it's translation to 3D. Now, what site is this we're all talking about? And I'd LOVE to take a stab at making that beastie in 3D. Looks like fun.

S E D A H – You like the first one, I hope that you mean the first rendered picture? LoL The first picture is a concept sketch… :0) Thanks again.

Pinky_Powers – I think I’ll make a name tag. :0)

lildragon – I will hold out for as long as I can but it is hard to do what I am doing, well that is why I am doing it. If you don’t challenge yourself you can’t get any better. This way I am challenging myself to the point where it is impossible. Great practice and I’m getting so much faster! Thanks for your comment! :0)

kreno – It’s Mr. Michel Gagné not Ms.……….. lol I think the rabbit modeling has come to an end for now. I need to have fresh concepts and different styles. Two was more than enough. Maybe someday though when I have nothing to do….. ha funny.

Teyon – Thanks! It wasn’t easy bring it to 3d from the sketch.

bentllama – That’s right Ms. Bentllama, Ms. Gagné wouldn’t like it,
Cheers,
Ms. Prevette. :0)

Thanks for the link! It's times like these when it's not so bad to work in a bookstore. I'm gonna go special order his books on Monday. Did he do any concept work for Lilo and Stich I wonder? That beastie on the cover of Frenzied Fauna seems to have a similar style and feel. Ah well, who cares, it's some fun art and exactly what I need to liven up my day....

Thanks again.

a little info on the original artist, Michel Gagne...he studied animation up in Canada and his student reel 'Prelude to Eden' i believe its called, is one of the greatest short animated films i've seen. he has since done quite a few, sadly not very successful, projects...including The Iron Giant and Osmosis Jones. he will begin work on a Batman comic series, has his own comic book Zed, a few very well done children's books, and many MANY other things...a modern day rennaisance man, no joke! if he ever speaks in a town nera you, i HIGHLY reccomend you sit in and have a listen, he's had an extraordinary life...one of the artists i would truly like to work with.
