View Full Version : Steambot 5000™
Manik Monkei 07-12-2002, 06:45 AM Hey everybody. Here's the model I'm currently working on. This guy is a belt-driven, steam-powered robot who is a companion to the backpacking girl in my other post. She rigged him up out of spare parts ;)

this is the doodle on which he was originally based. yes, he has a lightbulb on his face.

I like him, but can always use suggestions. Especially on his feet. Do they work for you? (the feet on the model, not the sketch).
I'll be working on the texture shortly, so expect updates! thanks!

I like it, but one thing that kind of bothers me is the mix of technology. The legs look like much more modern than the upperbody (especially the shocks, spring buffers instead?). He'll look great with a steam effect coming out of his back.

It's coming along nicely. I can't wait to see a base texture on this guy to see what kind of a color scheme you're going for. I agree with the previous post in that the shocks could be a bit too modern. Of course, what's the time period of the characters? It all really depends on that. Especially since he's built from spare parts. As far as the feet are concerned.....what happened to the cowboy boots idea you had?? I thought that was awesome. One thing you might want to consider is perhaps making his legs less symmetrical (if that IS how you spell it!). Since the robot is built from random parts, it could look cool if the legs were 'mickey moused' with different parts. Just a couple of ridiculous ideas from a hoser. Good work man....keep it up!

I see what you guys are saying about the mix of technology--it was intentionally a bit of a mishmash though. I wanted it to look sort of slapped together but still functional. There is no specific time period for the two characters... the only idea was that the girl was from a place/time more advanced than where she came across the robot.
mistah russell: I tried the cowboy boots... and they looked utterly ridiculous. :insane: it was nice as a concept, but not on the final piece. this model was made in 3B--3 beers and it looks good, eh?
I'm almost finished arranging the UV's... which I enjoy very much in the same way that I enjoy being poked repeatedly in the eye. Texture soon!

Started work on the texture. so far i've really only touched the torso and a bit of the 'face'. I wanted to get people's opinions.. especially on the colors. I envisioned this guy being quite worn/rusty... but is this going overboard, or does it work for you?
I think I'm going to shoot for a black iron kettle type texture for his back burner piece.

Ok, here it is: the almost-final version. Sorry for the delay in posting this, I've been working on another piece.
There's still a couple small pieces I haven't worked on texture-wise.. but I'm pretty pleased with it right now.

Man, oh man....I can not express how much I love this model. It is simply.....huge. Not huge as in gigantic or really big, but huge as in sick. And not sick as in I'm going to vomit. But sick as in this rules. Right? I think a bump and specularity map would definitely help put on the finishing touches. Are you going to do anything else with this character and the girl who goes with it? Or are they simply just demo reel characters? I'm really pleased with all the detail work you put into the legs and feet! You also have a lot of good optimization on this guy. I can't wait to see a finished render! What's the other piece you're working on? Have you posted it? I suppose I could just get off my lazy ass and browse the forum and look for myself.......but that would make too much sence. Keep it up!
