View Full Version : How to create a carved-in look?

Hello!

I am struggling with finding a way to create animated rock carvings, if possible through 2D-compositing. It doesn't have to be perfect photorealism, but almost.

Below is still imagery of what i'm trying to achieve.

For the moment I have a layer with animated rock carvings, white carvings against black backgr, so I can use the colour value as alpha value.This is composited, in multiply mode, over an "empty" rock. Using multiply mode, and colour correction I get a pretty nice result. I have also quite successfully used the rockcarving animation as a stencil, creating transparency in the rock, visualizing a third layer which is just a large red layer rock carving texture.

Know I wonder if anyone has an idea how to solve the "carved-in" relief effect seen in the images i posted, without having to paint manually on every frame.

Check your application for either a displace or offset node, and/or an emboss filter. These used in combination with one another will do what your looking for.

If you need to brute force it, just determine what angle you want your light to be coming from, and add a ligter pass slightly offset to one side, and a darker pass slightly offset to the other.

using a simple bevel or emboss will help, another thing you will need to do is to wear away your paint so that it looks like it belongs. You can do this by creating a high contrast image of your rock and using it as a mask on your paint. Also, experiment with different layer modes for your paint, some will make it look much more integrated (as in Hard light, Overlay, Color, etc...)

However I think the most important is wearing your paint away, that will help a lot.

Thank you altruizine and Jayk2k, for your many useful suggestions! I incorporated the emboss filter (after some alpha channel troubleshooting), and currently i find the overlay mode to give the best result. This gives a quite nice weared look.

Now I am considering, as yo say, to try to substitute the rock layer to some other rock, using the bear as a mask. Or it might work as it is now. The light looks convincing this way using the overlay or multiply mode, so I might stick with it.
