View Full Version : C4d used in indy film
JoelOtron 04-15-2004, 02:43 PM I've been working on effects sequences for an independent film called Steve Phoenix: the Untold Story, which just made its debut here in Philly for the Festival of Independents, which we have each year.
The film deals with a garage band who partake in various culture jamming schemes, and the reporter who is drawn into their web. Our studio was hired to develop a dream sequence that occurs near the end of the film, illustrating and concepting several fake billboards used in the film, and develop other cg effects and motion graphics.
We are actually still refining many of the sequences for future screenings, but here are some clips, all done in c4d and AE:
http://www.betatronstudios.com/sp/phoenix_end.mov
(12 mb qt sor3)
http://www.betatronstudios.com/sp/SP_sequence1.mov
(9.3 mb--look out for the non reflecting person :)
http://www.betatronstudios.com/sp/SP_sequence2.mov
(15 mb--bad use of dirtynuts here--hence the flickering)
And an early verion of a "fake" Fox premeire which ends the film.
http://www.betatronstudios.com/Bill/FoxUNTOLD%20STORY.mov
(25 mb)
FOr anyone interested, heres a link to the film site:

Some of the billboard designs we did are under the "story" section of the site.

Hey Flingster
Thanks
SP2 is the floating "deathstar" eyeballs right? That was just extrusions done from a sphere. They are all one single eyeball object. The SP 1 sequence was done using Jenna to distrubute all the eyeballs on the landscape.

the eyeball one is yucky in a cool way though...heh heh.
(what about the floating ship in SP_sequence2...no tessa...my bad...anyway its all good and even better to put on your CV bud..good job hope you get some other stuff work out of it.. )

just had an idea...what would be cool...would get the eyeball to turn to look at the floater...and then dilate to focus! heh heh...i guess its past now...but would have been v freaky.

Cool. Eyeballs remind me very much of a scene cut from Terry Gilliam's Brazil (or course done with models, not CGI). Looks like a fun project.

how about animating some stuff around the floater guy...
eg traditional animation guys would say put dizzy things flying around his head...eg birds tweeting around his head...ok i guess he is dreaming so not appropriate...but maybe some flying type things...dunno what though and always the distinct possibility it will look s**t...heh heh. At moment in a film like brazil that fits with the otherworldlyness of it all...but in this from what i can tell its more real life so it is harder to grasp albeit in a dream state if you follow....I guess whats very important is context in this case...Is the character scared...shocked...high...having fun....dazed....is he integrated in the dream world...or is he removed/abstract from the dream world...its kinda hard to tell atm. Despite the excellent composition its very static despite him floating in the sky...obviously you're limited to a degree with what footage the director has shot and how much license he gave you mess with.
If it was me i'd play around with the actual guy footage also...eg blur and motion the edges in long long streams....or liquify him a little with some sort of dream ripple...or play around with lighting streams....ala locco stuff darf did with the hair streams...only coloured streams dragging behind him further emphasising movement...you could play around with some S&T stuff maybe also...i would just test 3 or 4 different things based around movement of the floater and integration in the scene...a kinda of disguising process....hope this makes sense my little ramblings as usual. BTW its not bad at the moment...so don't think arrh well flingster's not keen or whatever...cos i think its funky...you get those eyes working it will really be funky...just i would like you to extend its possibilities even more to the freaky and wierd world of joeld...maybe utilise that medical illustration background more in the dream state things. Or of course ignore my rambling and go with the directors fit whatever that is...but i don't currently have the benefit of what the guys was wanting to achieve.
whatever you decide...have fun...and post your results.
no rotten tomatoes here....just bad sentence and paragraph structure from what i've looked back at! heh heh.

And the winner is Dr Dimension!!!!
Thats exactly what we intended. The film has some references to Brazil, so this sort of tied it together a bit.

in that case...ignore my babble above....and refer to my quote:

Hi again Flingster
Love your post style ;)
All your points are valid--and are all things we wanted to do. We are going to start working on enhancing /changing the animation over the next few weeks.
We had about 15 minutes of footage of the guy in front of green screen flapping around, and we were told to do what we liked with it. It was tricky to get him to look like he was flying (still needs work) since his body was cropped in the footage and we couldnt move him around too much or you'd see the edges of his cropped arms. Anyway, we have been discussing blur and particle effetcs, which is what we used with a bunch of flashback scenes in the film. I'll see if I can post any of that stuff.
Thanks for your comments.

Looks good. the eyeballs are especially visual. I would suggest on the first clip adding a bit more detail or variety to the structure the guys flys into. It seems a bit bland considering the size it is. The eye ball scene has that detail and I like the haze you have in the scene.

Thanks fxGogo
Yes, we will be adding varios billboards from the film (like the miss piggy board) all over the walls. I'm doing it using the exported aec file in AE from C4d. Its working out pretty well--never worked with exported lights and cameras in AE b4--highly reccomend playing with the technique.

I love the AE and C4D link, it really makes my life so much easier. The trouble is that I only have commotion at home, so the magic is not hannening much. It is my birthday tommorrow, so maybe you can buy me a copy....;)

Well happy birthday then Gareth!
Sorry--on a tight birthday present budget, maybe flingster can send one to you.
Just for the hell of it, you might try ebay. Though not for the faint hearted, I've manged to get some legit software this way for cheaper then retail.
