View Full Version : Beast of Burden - Character - Eki Halkka
Halsu 07-11-2002, 05:24 PM I'm not much of a character modeler, but i thought i'd give it a shot... the first idea is a multiped character, i'm not sure yet will this be the finished design.

Okay, I started working on it in modeler... the concept seems to work. Here's what i have after a few hours:

Okay, here's a render with more or less all the stuff i planned to add, with some rough textures and Overcaster lighting (no radiosity).
I will post a no textures "clay look" render soon -

Okay, here's the clay look model. Only bump maps here.
I'm rather happy with it already, even though the process has been rather quick (especially as this is my first real character - i've done some heads and stuff earlier but let's not talk about them in public, ok? ;-)

I like the idea, very original. the model is turning out well. One crit is that the face could use a little more detail, but I understand its a WIP.
Lets see more!!

Ok first off. I think that itīs a damn fine creature
maybe you should make the head stand out a little and add some wrinkles to the skin on the body to show some wear and tear.
As a wip itīs looking very promising and Iīll keep an eye on the updates...
And hey... thanks for the free scripts and actions  Makes me think...ehh do you even have time entering this challenge, considering I need more plugins ?

Hehe.. actually, i'm on a summer vacation so i have time to participate in both. I'm currently working on PlugPak 2.0 too, so the scripts keep a comin'.
I did some more work on the head, here's a closer look.

Very cool design of your BoB. A couple crits I'd give are that I think either the leg segments need to be closer together, or it needs more of a belly under and between the legs.
The textures and bump on that beast are fantastic.

Thanks for the compliments... I thought about the belly/leg thing when i built this, but i thought the beast would have hard time walking if the feet are too close to each other ;-)
The belts that keep the contraption on the beast's back are deliberately very tight, it's more visible in the side shot (i'll render one soon)
For now, I added a little sas lite hair, and did some other slight modifications.
Comments??

Look at the poor thing - they haven't adjusted the belts since it was a baby...

Ohhhh OK I see the belt - belly tightness now. I guess I'd suggest trying to make it more obvious that the beast has grown 'around' the belts then. Try adding a tight bulge along the belly/chest where the edge of the belt runs. That might help show that the belts are constricting in on the beast.
Only other commet would be about the hair. The only hair which will be judged is hair that is made with real geometry, or can be converted to real geometry. To be honest I don't know sasquatch or sas-lite, but if you want the hair to count in the end then you'll have to convert it to geometry.

I'll prolly try to add some more detail soon - what kind of detail would you suggest in the head? I guess i should do a small web search for seals and walrus for inspiration...
Oh, i think i will change my thumbnail. Which is more informative??

Great concept, Its turning out great! I'm really liking the chains so far. Are you modeling him in a pose or do you plan on rigging him? Reason I ask is because from the side view it looks like hes leaning forward. If he is posed I suggest you tighten the slack in the chains, they are haning to much if they are pulling something. If he isnt posed try angeling the legs forward a bit starting from the middel and moving up progressively.
I like (A), nice and simple. :applause:
I think his "claw nails" should be a bit more sharp and should touch the ground

wow, I saw u're name and just had 2 check out wot u r doing...
the only crit I have is the legs and toe-nails, the middle and 2nd to last legs look stretched... the toe-nails look a little flat I think...
thought I'd have my 2 cents worth but a real nice entry, glad 2 c u're in this challenge...
