View Full Version : "BattleMech: CRD-3R Crusader"
JackSkieczius 04-14-2004, 02:42 AM This is a model of a CRD-3R Crusader BattleMech from the popular board game BattleTech and or the computer game series MechWarrior. I am creating it for an amiture movie based on Battletech.
The type of critique i am looking for is that of detailing a model. I am trying to get a reallalistic look here. With lots of details and what not. So like any ideas on detailing stratagies or ideas would be helpfull. Also a nice wow thats cool would do ;)
The software i use it Lightwave 7.5c. its a great program that i have been useing for close ot a year now.
ok, and for omse WIP pics.

i have never seen one of the originals, but i like the detail you have in the "torso", and I think you should carry that same detail through the entire model. I would like to see an image of the entire model too, so I can get a feel for the proportions of your robot. If you aren't adding any more detail, you may want to go in and soften your normals, or the equivelent to that in lightwave, One thing that adds a lot of detail, and believability is manufacturing details, like welds an other imperfections. So some beveling on the edges would add a lot of interest, and you get some nice highlights from your lights once you make your materials more metallic

Ok, here a little update.
Been working very hard on this. Getting all the details all over the place.
I am sort of trying to get as good as one of the leading Mech modelers.
His site being here
http://www.clanwolf.ws/graphics/pawel/
But don’t look there, no don’t do that. Come look at my stuff.
Now I know there is a bit of gaps in my detailing, but I promise I will go back to them later on. and if I don’t, please yell at me till I do. Cause I don’t want this model to be a mistake like my Lao Hu I made a few weeks back.
My goal i guess is to a Mech model that is very fun to look at. Which makes you interested. one that will make you wet your pants.
Still trying to get to it. But I am getting there. Just having problems coming up with ideas.
ok the two pics I have are:

Ok, so I guess its just a site seeing tour till i get almost done. so what do you all think?

Looking very good, but some of the detail strikes me as "filler" (ie: Lines dropped in to fill space)
One idea is to find somewhere in your city that sells farm or heavy machinery and take alook at thier engine compartments and such. Gives you idea's on casing structure and other details.
Or Google search for the same things.
Hope that helps, and I'll keep an eye on this thread.

ok, seem that many things get puched away here on these forums, well ok, anyway i have an animation to show.
not much but what it is was my test animation to show and see how the arm will move. i did however change some things shortly after doing this animation. the arm jsut didnt bend right at the elbow.
well anyway, the arm consists of 6 parts.
the animation file here:
http://www.mektek.net/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=372197
is a avi divx formate. less then a meg. only 12 seconds long, but have fun.

looks really good so far...
as for the filler lines... that was how battletech was styled... they were basic blocky shapes in the TRO's and the just kinda threw lines at them it seemed like...
oh well..... takes me back to the good ol' days

I like this model a lot - very well done and very detailed. Can't wait to see it textured (if that is your plan). What other 'Mechs are you planning on doing from CBT series?
I have also started modeling 'Mechs, but from the WizKids tabletop game "MechWarrior", mine are not as detailed because I am using the plastic figures as reference for the models. I have pretty much finished Bounty Hunter's - Marauder II (link in sig) and just started on Sadia Wolf's Catapult.
Keep up the excellent work and anticipating further updates.

Impressive amount of detail. I remember seeing a pic of the Crusader in the back of a Battletech book. Are you going to do any a 'scorched' marks like from missiles and lasers?

1. Scratches work best on edges where it will get scraped the most.
Right now the scratches are uniform all over the model.
2. It needs other metal material stuff like specular, and reflection maps.

yes, you are right. they should beo n the edges. but how long would it take me to do every sharpe edge. if there was an easyer way i would live to have em all on the edges.
but ok, i will fix some of that once i finish the basic texture, then i will bake the entire texture i have into a UVmap. then i will only have one UVmap to edit and add in scraps around the edges and such. i cant wait to see what i can do ones there.
right now i am finding little things aobut my model that i dont like. so i will be adding a little to the mesh.
geez, i did the mesh in a week. but finishing up a ncie texture will take some time. sheesh............
hey dose any one have any ideas on how to make these edges things. i now jsut wish that lightwave had some sort of gradient setting for sharp edges.

@ PsychoSilence
Thanks for taking interest into my thread. oh, and no ito nly took me a week to create the mesh. tho i worked like 12 hours on it each day. ;)
ok, here is a ncie pic for you all. i started to make the carious colors of the texture, only did one side tho, still have to mirror that other side later. the mech is supose to be painted a gray with red highlights. plus in some areas i put a primer color on there for the parts that done need a gray paint. thos are areas such as in between joints and such.
ok, itsa big pic, hope its not to big for you all.

well my raving fans. ;) here it is, just about complete. i give to you, my most greatest model ever, "Barbarossa". and yes, that barbarossa. dose anyone know there history here and know why i nicked named him barbarossa? well anyway. yesterday i got my gig of ram i ordered. coast me $200 but it was well worth it. it alowed me to finish up the texture on my crusader. so far i am jsut about finished. next thing i have to do is bake the texture into a large texture map. then i am just about done.
how do you think it looks? is it real yet? could you picture youeself next to it?
