Im tryin to make a fairly flat cylinder act like a spot light with objects in front of it creating shafts in the light. (think of the bat signal!) Anyway, do i do this by making the object glow or is there some other technique? Thanks for any help!

P.S. I'm really, really new to this!

Don't know the software you are using. But I think a good render is needed (know that MentalRay can do this), check out the jovex MetalForMaya online tutorial :)

if u're using 3ds max,the advanced lightning overriding material with the render using radiosity shall do this.
PS: this kind of posts is rather application specific. Post it on your application's forum is better. : )

When you talk about visible shafts of light coming out of the object, what you really want is "volumetric light." You might get this by shining a spot light with volumetric fog enabled through a hole that casts a shadow in the shape of the object, or you might get it by extruding an object in the shape of the shaft of light and applying a volumetric shader to it.
