Hail to the Lightwave user community and congrats too, there so many wonderful artists using that incredible software! :applause:

Here is my question: as a 3d hobbyist I think I will never have enough money to buy the 'standard' version of lightwave but since I am a student, I was told by a friend of mine that I could buy it for about 400$. This price seems incredibly low compared to the 1500$ of the retail version... I was wondering if some of the features had been taken off from the student version ? Or maybe the render speed is limited or something ?

Thank you very much in advance for you help

No difference ! Same version but cannot be used in a commercial environment. When you decide to go the commercial route, get the next upgrade or contact Newtek for details.

I have had the educational version and then upgraded to the commercial version...the only difference between the 2 is legal right of usage. If you are using the educational version you can't make money off the stuff you make with it...if its a commercial version you can do whatever you want with it. There is absolutely NO difference between them. And yes, $400 for the full version (educational pricing) is a superb deal, take it. I paid $900 for my educational version (when Lightwave was $2500 retail). Even at $900 it was well worth it. :buttrock:

I bought my copy of Lightwave 7.5 Academic for $350.00 at www.journeyed.com... but I believe the price is back up to $400.00 (USD) now.

www.creationengine.com is another great academic discount site.

no difference between academic and commercial except the academic cannot be used legally for commercial use.

Newtek has the best upgrade and student version pricing in the industry. This is a major advantage of attracting paying users. In addition, they have an excellent system when selling your software too. Go and buy the student version.

Small footnote. The LW academic license is the only one that you cannot resell (unless the terms have changed in recent times). To do so, you have to upgrade to a full commercial license first.

Your conscience !!

Completely incorrect. The student version is fully upgradable. It is a complete copy of LW that can be patched and upgraded in exactly the same way as a copy with a full commercial license. The only difference betwen the two is the wording on the license, the software supplied is identical.

They really can't, but if they do they have full rights to sue you for illegal use of the software.

Not true. I have upgraded from 6 to 6.5 and 7 to 7.5 using educational versions.
