What doesn't look right if you try it?
Of course, to draw that little guy you need to know how to draw, nobody can help you with that. However, people can teach you how to make the moon if that's what you want.

Glow shouldn't be a problem
1) Make a moon, the texture s the main problem, I have no idea how to do that. I guess drawing skills are required for this.
2) Erase the part of the moon you don't need, to give it the shape of DreamWorks' moon
3) Duplicate the moon's layer.
4) Move the copy layer under the original moon
5) Blur the copy, till you'll se a nice glow effect.
Now you can make another copy of the original moon, and erase most of the moon, except the parts you to glow ever more.
Make another outer glow, play a bit with the Size and Spread
And there you have it!
But then again, The actual moon surface is the problem, there should be a tutorial around to make a moon suface...

yup that is what i did oh here are a couple things i didnt mention..... i made a complete moon like the tutorial ( dont forget the spherize step)
... then i made a cresent selection and deleted the rest.....
.... the highlight layer is a blank layer that i did a real light purple and set a glow on it...... just on the tip and bottom and egde .... there is not much on the layer itself .......
main thing is which i didnt take the time out to do is to DRAW the craters ect.... dont expect photoshop to do it for you....

Has anyone cosidered taking a moon image from Nasa and masking it to fit the shape you want and adding a glow? They have a huge database of hi-res space images. You can use one of their images of the moon, or create a 3D moon using a texture map of the moon. Then use masks, glows, or Opacity filters to create a Dreamworks-like image.
I use Lightwave for 3D but you can use any modeler and us the file linked on this page for a surface, then follow the Photoshop directions. You can just use the texture and Spherize in Photoshop to get a similar effect, but it won't quite have that 3D look.

um yeah and if you want to draw a picture of a corvette just take a scan from a brochure ....... and add a filter

Well, smart guy...
Noone mentioned modeling one, everyone's suggestion was to create one from textures in Photoshop. If you're doing a 2D image of the moon, why would you fake it rather than use an actual image? If you needed a 2D image of a Corvette, would you draw it in Photoshop using gradients or use stock photography? The issue was the Moon's texture. Why fake that when you can use the real thing? Dreamworks uses the real thing. As a matter of fact, in my model I've lined my Moon texture up with there's.

in all honesty first this is a photoshop thread not a modeling thread...... an more importantly if i need a 2d picture of a corvette i would draw it and have .... i am an artist/ illustrator thats what i do for a living is draw ..... i do beleive the question asked was how to do the technique in photoshop not where can he get stock photography
your question why fake it if you can use the real thing is actually moot in this thread cause why make it in 3d if you can use the real think ...... but please dont take this as a slam to you ..... it's not .... just a simple cry from an actual illustrator who draws for a living that there is a difference between stock photos and art......
