Hello everyone! This is my first post on the CGTalk forums. ^_^ I've just been absently reading them, but now I've decided to join the fun!

Anyway, I just wanted to ask you fellow Lightwavers out there some questions.. They are sorta complicated but I've taken some screenshots, so hopefully it will make a bit more sense when I try to explain it all... My main question is related to the Bevel tool in LW...(I have 7.0 btw)

Basically, I want to know if there is a way to use the Bevel tool that allows me to bevel a *set* of faces as one; instead of splitting them into sections. I know there is a smooth shift tool, but that does not allow me to *inset* the faces, I have to use the smooth shift tool *with* the stretch tool to inset it properly. However, the stretch tool works on the axis of where I click, where as the bevel tool works on an axis fully centered around the entire poly face..thus stretching creates problems..
I've made a little example of my smooth shifting + stretch tool technique, and how it doesn't quite do what I want (and when it does, it's much slower than the control of bevel)... Anyway here's my example: (please look at the picture attached)

Block A: this is just a simple block I have beveled.. this is how I want objects B and C to look (just referring to the edges bevel makes), however the subsections obviously dont allow that. Basically I want the objects to have edges for the light to bounce off of.

Block B: This is a block that I have Smooth Shifted the top of, then I used stretch where the arrows point. obviously doesn't work.

Block C: this time I smooth shifted + stretched the sides outwards, instead of the top, still not what I want..

D: this is obviously perfect, I simply made this shape whole, extruded it and then beveled it, now I can go and make my subsections.. But that does not solve my problem of when I already HAVE the subsections cut... :(

I don't know if that made any sense at all, it's hard for me to describe it in any simple way really. Anyway, if any of you can help me with this I would love to hear!! Thanks for your time! :D

if you're willing to shell out for it, Bevel++ does exactly what you're looking for. Right about $30, I believe.

However, what I would do in your situation is simply select the poly group in question, hit 'ctrl-z' to merge, do the bevel and inset, then split the top layer if necessary. (Which, if you're doing buildings and the like, really isn't.)

Or alternatively (if you've got a bit more spare cash) you could spring for Shekinah Studios awesome VertiBevel plugin - www.skstudios.com

You need to get JettoBevel (http://www.3dfightclub.com/~jettocrack/lightwave/plugins/) . It does exactly what you want and it's free! I believe this much needed functionality is built into the next version of LW. About time too.

Sorry, just realised it's a 7.5c plug-in. Oh well.

Hey, thanks for the fast replies everyone! I think I'm going to try Maxx's technique untill I can get ahold of 7.5.. (although I was trying to wait for 8.0 *sigh*) That should work great. Also, I seem to have left my "Rotate" question out of my original post entirely. This is what happens when I post at midnight.. Anyway, if anyone wants to bother, I just have another question about a problem I run into with rotated objects.. Here's an example :

Say I use the Disk tool in the Top perspective and build a cylinder, I now rotate it 35 degrees in the Back perspective (either direction), then 35 degrees in the Top perspective, I now have two problems : If I try to resize the top polyface of my cylinder, I will warp the object because I only know how to use Size or Stretch in the Back, Top, and Right perspectives...which is no longer the axis of my polyface.. Same problem happens with the Move tool, if I want to extend the object along its axis, it will warp.. The bevel tool seems to handle this fine though, I can extend the object correctly.. Is there anyway I can extend the object this way with the Move tool alone? (along the axis of the polyface)

Anyway, thanks again everyone!:applause:

Check this out - CPlane (http://www.flay.com/GetDetail.cfm?ID=1535) - sounds like exactly what you're looking for.

Wow this looks great! I'm gonna try it out tonight! hehe.. *rubs hands together* Thanks a ton! I wish lightwave already this tool.. I guess that's what Lscripting is for though.. Do you know of any other plugins that are handy? I basically only have the default set right now. I'm going to look around this Flay.com site more. Looks awesome.. Thanks again!

ResPower's Super/UV is excellent for UV mapping - four free tools - PolyMove, PolySnap, PolyScale & PolyRotate. For $30 you can buy the "Pro" version which adds PolyStretch, MapFit, FitStretch & MapExport. www.respower.com
