View Full Version : Question about Modeler and Layers

Hello,

I purchased Polas's Tree Designer and can't figure out.

Part of a tutorial I am following is this:

"Put your tree to a foreground layer and disable background layers"

which I did...

Further on, the Tutorial reads:

"Now you have leaves and branches in the same layer and you will not be able to use clip maps. Cut and Paste leaves to next empty layer."

My question is how do I isolate the leaves? If I hit "cut"- the whole object disappears.

One difference I notice after adding the leaves is that in the upper right area of the screen where there is layer info...my model now has an asterick
next to it.

I've spent a couple hours trying different things and have given up.

Is there an easy way to separately select elements of a model?

Thanks for any info.

Regards,
JB

Depending on how the model is segmented, try this (you may have already):

- select a polygon from your leaves
- hit your right bracket key - ]

this should select all connected polys. If the leaves are all connected, your're good now. If not, check polygon statistics by hitting the "w" key while in POLY mode. Maybe some groups are specified there.

Good luck.

If your model has surfaces named i.e. Bark, Leaves etc change to poly select mode down at the bottom of the screen.

Press W to bring up the Polygon Statistics pannel. Scroll down to 'Surf' which is for Surface. Select the surface you want, i.e. leaves and press the + beside Surf. This will select all polys under that name.

Cheers.

Exactly. in any case, when modeling is a good thing to select parts of the objects and give them a surface (hit q and the surface dialog box appears) you can also use parts to organize other kinda group of your object not surface related.
Layers are very good to organize modelling with a good workflow for sure, and also many Lw tools use layers to work. :)

One last note about the * this just means the model your working on has changed and hasn't been saved yet. When you hit the 's' key and save the model it will disappear.
