nice, but what's with the two-tone? why is there such a harsh transition on the shading?

reflection of the floor maybe - is the shader of the spheres reflective?

The Shader is just a lambert with a white to browncolor tone...no refletion. It is the way that this light responds to objects...It has deactivated the Penubra adjust in the shadow...maybe it will be ok in the final version...I don't know yet.

But isn't that light so cool?

well,

don't mess with GI_Joe (and the other GI fakers) yet

not before you can get rid of this nasty shadowing which is as close to GI as a plain spotlight rig

Use a volume light to illuminate within a given volume. Volume lights provide control of light direction, color and decay within a bounded volume. A major advantage of using a volume light is that you have a visual representation of the extent of the light.

The falloff of light in the volume can be represented by the color ramp attribute in Maya, which avoids the need for various decay parameters, and also provides additional control. The color ramp is also useful for volume fog.

You can achieve different effects with light direction. Outward behaves like a point light and the light shape dictates the extent of the light. Downward acts like a directional light and the light shape dictates the extent of the light. Inward reverses the normal direction for shading, giving the appearance of inward illumination. When using shadows with Inward light direction you may get unexpected results.

regarding the volume light - i drew my conclusions from the image you posted - i have no experience with it whatsoever - so no idea what it's capable of or not

in general scripts for maya are published at http://www.highend3d.com/maya/mel/

GI_Joe is from pixho and can be found at http://www.pixho.com
