I'm using maya four and I need some ideas on how to model or make realistic hair, any help would be great.

This should probably be in the Maya section.

Are you going for cartoon or realistic hair?

YOu can use thin nurbs plans to represent hair (probably around 20-40?) , and then paint some transparency maps in photoshop, i've seen this done quite succesfully.

alternatively you can use Paint effects, theres a tutorial on aliaswavefront site i believe... theres also one on highend 3D:

paintfx hair (http://www.highend3d.com/maya/tutorials/pfxhair/)

hope this helps

I think it all depends on how you want the hair to move (if at all)...

PaintFX is a great method with some major drawbacks (render time and it being a "post" effect)...and its the easiest way to make it react to "gravity"..

The way I would normally go about doing it is to model it (as stated above) and use ramps/transparency maps to get a neat effect...

Alternativly..you can do it the OLD way which is with particles..but lets just say there is a reason they stopped doing it that way ;)

I have most of the technices exept paint effects, and had some pretty good results. But nothing comes close to AKI for long hair simulation, or the xsi 2.0 simulator. I will try the painteffects I was told to use cloth as a lattice deformer I think that will work great.
Anyway I was hoping that somebody might be able to help me out with fur attractors, anyone know of any good tutorials out there. I just cant get it to work. If someone could even point me in the right direction I am sure I could figure out all the intricacies once I know the basics. I would really apreciate some help.
Thanx

Looking the history of Square...I think they most likley did a combo of paintFX and Modeling. They modeled the "base hair" , and used the paintFX for the loose ones. I could be wrong however, because it isnt unlike them to use propriatary (sp?) applications.

The hair was developed with propriatary software by Square. The hair was placed strand by strand. It was rendered in Renderman using the curve rendering function. The dynamic movement was calculated in Maya and geometry showed the approximate collisions before rendering. There were several attributes for the environment such as wind force and direction. The hair was rendered in a seperate pass and composited on later. Aki's hair alone took up about 30% of the total rendering time. They said they had lots of trouble making the hair look nicely combed - it would often get knots and tangles.
