hi there!
i am really new to this forum but in a few weeks im considering to buy a new 3d software. got some experience in other packages and at the moment im playing with Maya PLE. ill buy new app to use it mainly in the character animation. do you think that i could learn some basic stuff in Maya in about 6 months? im a mac user so... no external renderer! what about it? is it powerful enough to create some nice effects? and only *complete* version... shall it be enough? i love S-D-S... ;\

any help would be appreciated.

Although, the trend goes towards XSI, Maya always had
state of the art character animation tools and still has.
If you already have 3d experience you should be able to learn it
in far less than 6 months, maybe not every single feature but
I guess you should have far more than a basic knowledge of
the package after 6 months, if you invest some time in it.

The renderer is no one click and you´re happy solution, but with
a few free plugins from highend3d and some knowledge of the
hypershade you can get some great results. Lets hope Mark
Davies will release his light-transport plugin soon. :-)

Btw, who needs the unlimited version, use connect poly shape
for subDees, fake fur with paint effectsand the new nurbs tools are pretty useless.

And Maya´s among the cheaper 3d packages now, so go for it!

yeah, maya rox
though if you're a noob to 3D it's a hard package

Maya is the first package I really got to know and it took me about 9 months to understand and implement everything.
(ok, maybe it's just me being dumb or something... :wavey: )

But now, If I have an idea, I know how to begin with it etc.
And it's a GREAT Package (if you know it ;) )

i love it - i'm sure you will be able to learn the basic techniques within months - i did it, wouthout any prior knowledge of CG applications at all - the delivered manuals are great

and there's so much information out there - so many people helping out - subscribe to the highend3d mailing list

and maya's architecture is straight (mostly) - it's based on a very simple concept - nodes - once you understand the concept you will be very empowered because you can start using MEL - which kicks ass

i think the native renderer is very solid (although it sometimes can be too hungry for memory) and you can achieve great results with proper tweaking

maya complete will do it - there ain't much in unlimited that you couldn't do with complete and some more (mostly free) plugins - as mentioned the CPS tools are a more than proper replacement for subdiv surfaces

dobry?

me to. i really think maya is the easiest package to learn. as i come from softimage i know the big difference in the learning curve. also xsi, that hasn't changed sooo much in the handling is hard to learn for beginners. even if maya is not the best in some areas but still the best in the other areas it has the most intuitive way to handle the things.

svenip, you should try 3DS MAX then, that's what I call an easy to learn package... (but it sux)

max was the first package i was working with then it came out as "MAX". i don't wanna be misunderstood. i don't say maya is the best. i'm always open for new software and try to look at everything that's on the market. max is really a great thing, softimage too (for me still better then xsi in some ways), and so on. so it's just my opinion that i've found maya very very easy to learn and it's really intuitive how it works :)

p.s. ok haven't worked with max since 2 years or so, so i'm back behind the wheel maybe
