I've been trying to make realistic bump maps for my character, but i keep having this problem where they dont show up at a distance. Up close the bump map is fine..but zoom out a little and the maps are hardly noticeable and the model looks too smooth. If i increase the depth of the map, it looks very unrealistic. Is there any solution to this besides using a different renderer (other than the default)?

depends on what kind of bumps you are talking about. If you're talking a skin texture then it would disappear in the distance.

however if you're talking horns, or giant warts, or something that noticable sticks out from the body then it needs to be mesh. Either modelled or generated by a displacement map.

Perhaps you could post a sample of your character so we can see what's going on.

You probably don't want your bump maps showing too prominently at a distance on something like skin, it looks disturbing. Specularity and diffusion become more important than bump as you get further from the surface of skin. At a distance, all but the most wrinkly, chapped skin take on a certain smooth quality.

Wow that was a quick reply...thanks. Im at work right now so i dont have the model or any renders with me. The detail im concerned with is in the face/clothing, etc, which is too small for a displacement. I guess what Im really looking for though is if there were any settings that could possibly increase the detail at further distances. Rendering with Brazil, the bumps show up subtly but they make a noticeable difference. I know the default renderer is crap compared to Brazil but maybe there's something im missing. Like increasing the shadow map, render settings etc..

You could try using a sharper antialiasing algorythm in the renderer, maybe Catmull-Rom. Also, it might be worth fiddling with the map filtering options.

If not then maybe stick with Brazil :)

Max has a real pain in the arse problem with 'blurring' off bitmaps when they get further away from the camera... One little (but not always effective) tip is to take down the default blur for your map from 1 to 0.5 or lower.

Hey guys, thanks for your help
I tried to adjust the blur settings for the material (Funny i never noticed that property before) and also the anti-aliasing filter in the renderer. I think playing with the settings can bring me closer to what i was looking for and I think these quick tests are a little better. Posting it here in case you're interested. Please excuse the unstitched model ;) ..it still needs alot of work

It looks better! Have you also tried playing with super sampling? I think it can help you as well.
Cheers!
