View Full Version : XSI and TIFF don't mix well

Funny situation here.
I've been staring at my monitor for hours trying to figure out why my mix two colors and mix 8 color nodes weren't working, and I just discovered that it was my file format. I was using TIFF files for my color and weight maps.

Has there always been an issue with TIFF files? Anyway, I'm glad to be unstuck from this problem. I'm now using the Softimage proprietary format ".PIC". Fortunately, Mirage has the option to export in the .pic format. Happy days. :)

I re-watched and re-read every tutorial, video, and thread on the mixing subject (about three times each), wondering what I was doing wrong, only to guess it was my file format. Huh. Oh, and I guess it was the pic ofrmat because, the default noIcon_pic worked just fine, but my custom images did not, and this lead me to my conclusion.

Another issue: the TIFF format would sporadically crash XSI when I attempted to select a TIFF file.

It might be that the tiff files were using some compression or encoding scheme that MR/XSI didn't like.

Look in the Mental Ray docs under texture mapping (sec. 1.12) for a list detailing exactly what file formats are supported.

Thanks TachyOn: Thanks for hte tip on the MEntal Ray manuals. I forgot they came with XSI.

I've guessed that Mirage was compressing with the LZW compressor.

I tried the same file with a TIFF format, and with no compression, and it worked fine.
