View Full Version : Compurter Crashed. Somebody...HELP!
Okay I think I maxed out my hardrive. I left my computer running for awhile and when I'd come back to mess around with painter it was frozen in screen saver mode. I tried to move the mouse to wake the thing up. I even played with the keys. After about ten minutes of waiting I just decided to restart my computer with the automatic switch. That didnt work. So I just turned it off.
Now when I go to turn it on, the start up menu wont even come on. The usual beebing sound that comes on before it is absent as well. Instead just a blank screen and a delayed beeb, with a four count that comes on 3 to 5 minutes after it's turned on. Does anyone know what has happened and how to fix this with out loosing what's saved on my hardrive? I really really need to get my computer running.again. :banghead: :scream: :banghead:

What kind of mother board do you have? What you are hearing is the post trying to tell you something aint right (as if you couldn't tell). If its made by dell or compaq or someone like that you can usually search for POST results that will help clue you in as to what the problem maybe. If you built it yourself you'll have to go the the manufactures web site.

I bet my money on the RAM, CPU or Motherboard.
Try remove/replace some RAM modules.
And a quick n dirty thing which I always try is to simply press on the motherboard and CPU. Just to make sure there is no weak link somewhere.. Actually my VERY old motherboard once broke down and I pressed it a little and then it worked again.. It was some faulty contacts who needed some pressure to work.. :)
(it finally mega-broke down a few weeks later though).
Press gently!

Man sorry about the big delay wish I could've got to you guys earlier but as you know my computer isn't working.
okay
I have a 1.3 ghz pentium 3 or 4 can't remember
Cd-r/rw
3.14 hard disk
cant remember my ram
I have a lexmark printer
Canoscan scanner
I'm on Win xp proffessional
Actually I was running two operating systems both xp cus I couldnt access the other should have fixed that.
I dont know if it is the fan or not but I'll check that out cus it was giving me some trouble. And how exactly do I get to my motherboard? I really do appreciate the help here. I'm dying without my computer. Almost forgot how to use a keyboard.
Okay, I actually checked the fan cleaned, and dusted it and all the ports, disconnected and then reconnected the drivers, and it still wont work. Does anyone have any advice?

You NEED to discover what model and make the motherboard is. It is giving you four beeps. That is motherboard talk for "Something is wrong. Go find my beep codes in a manual so I can tell you what it is".
Find out what it is and take appropriate action. It could be anything from the PSU not giving it enough power to RAM to CPU dying. Until you find that out, you will be flailing in the dark in an attempt to make it work.
Look on the motherboard itself. Look for numbers. If you don't know what they are, go to google, put them in and try to find the number online. Alternatively, motherboards.org has a motherboard identifier to help.
Good luck.

as Tarrbot points out at this stage Identifying which BIOS you have is the most inportant step
AMI (American Megatrends) ? Award? Phoenix? anything ringing a bell?
it would show up on the very first screen right after the computer clears POST (which is what it is now failing to do)
If you can remember that much we can probably ID the beep code for you (however some are fairly broad)
re your HDD is probably just fine, and could easily be migrated to another install\computer to copy the data at need
the make and model of your motherboard will tell us which BIOS you have (at least the make if not the version)

Are the beeps continuous?

it'll be labeled as a compaq BIOS and totally locked. you could just give compaq a call.
but if u have to go through HP - buy a new computer. :)
compaq support used to be good.
Okay actually I checked the beebs again and it was a 3 count. !, 2 and the 3rd one is delayed. Someone was telling me that it might be my video card but wasnt sure cus the 3rd beeb was delayed. Anyone know exactly what's going on.

We will never know what's going on until we know the exact model of the motherboard and therefore we will know the exact BIOS it has.
Each BIOS maker has different beep codes. Until then, it's nigh impossible to understand what's going on. :(

you say u can't rember. did you build the computer yourself?
or buy it. if you bought it contact the manufacturer.
