I would use a particle system with spheres as your objects. Now the magic of getting the smoke look will happen in the materials. On a basic level you will need a noise pattern and a falloff texture to fade the noise pattern off as it gets to the edges of the sphere. Your movement of your smoke will come from using particles deformers and different particle systems sitting on top of one another. Does that make sense, sorry I have a head cold at the moment and can't think straight.

Also you might want to try the now free version of FIZZ - It seems to work ok with my version of XL6

Fizz allows you to calculate particle collisions and forces with objects or other particles. Fizz also includes a "spawning" option in which new particles are generated from a collision.

thanks again guys. fx what did you mean by falloff texture

What I mean was falloff channel shader. It is one of the old 'Bhodi Nuts' shaders. Basically it gives you a colour gradient based on the angle of the normal to the camera (if you choose the camera as the object of referenc). So if we had a black and white gradient, it would have white for normals that faced the camera and as the normals angled away from the camera, they would become more and more black.
