Just an FYI, this forum doesnt actuomatically parse URLs with "!" in them, so when you have a url like that you want to manually put it inside some [/b]][/url] tags.

Nicely done. The camera work in particular is very well done and you've got a nice lighting style.

The only problem with it really is that the giant robot doesn't seem very giant at all. Particularly I think it's the model that does this: there doesn't seem to be enough detail. Maybe you could get away with some more detailed displacement textures. A bit of ambient occlusion would really help sell it too.

CEE-GEE
04-06-2004, 07:44 PM
Thanks everyone for the appreciation.

playmesumch00ns, I carefully read your notes, I think yours crits are interesting.
By the way you will better feel the scale of the robots in the finished movie, there are other shots where you will see the nazi machine walking trough ships and grabbing trucks and stuff like that. About the detailing, that's true, perhaps more scale details would be of some help in giving the real sense of size.
Unfortunately I have to care about hundreds of shots, and often I maybe give too much attention to the overall result instead of concentrating on each element, even if we are talking about main characters.

Thanks for your comments!

VERY nice. The robot is a bit campy in design for what seems like a serious piece...but nothing serious.

The production as a whole is frickin' awesome. Very impressed.

It totally feels like an opening one of the Battlefield games from EA. Music and all.

Did you work on any of the cinematics for those games?

Very cool. I pity your poor server, and I'm glad I got a copy before it crashes, which is likely to happen any moment. Definitely very game-cinematic feel. I don't know if I like the design of the robot... I don't really agree that there is a scale problem with it but I think the perception of a scale problem is coming from the fact that it reminds me of a giant version of those little green plastic soldiers you can buy like 50 of for 5 bucks at a toy store. It's kind of odd in the scheme of the rest of the film, but overall it works and I think seeing it in the context of the whole film it'll be fine.

Very cool stuff, glad to have it. I'm starting pre-production on a film of my own that shares some qualities of this, so it'll be good inspiration as I get down to concept art and storyboarding. Congrats on front page.

[edit] I watched it twice more... GOD I love that shot of the plane spiralling towards the robot and the wing getting shot up. That looks faaaannntastic! Did you do some live-action compositing in this or is it entirely digital? Some of the sets look they could be live action tho more likely CG, but there is one shot where a guy is running towards the camera and it looks like he's live action. The newpaper is over the top at that point so I can't quite tell. Just wondering!

[re-edit] What are you doing your visual effects in? The dynamics look very well done.

Hi kicit, well most probably it will be longer than my previous work "The Hunt".
Lots of stuff is still missing, especially the "main course", which is the fighting between the Nazi and USA machine, plus all the incockpit shots with the fighter squadron's captain.

I think it will be approximately more than 10 minutes in all

Hey there my Italiano friend!

Why does everyone seem to use the same score music from The Rock or Crimson Tide, or something very similar?

Yep, I think this is quite nice. Cinematography is quite good too, so keep up the good work!

Are you editing this together in Premiere by the way? Just a point of curiosity for me, and was also wondering if im also looking at your editing skills?

It's not that I'm saying Hans Zimmer isn't a good composer, I just find it distressing that more and more people are using his excellent music to enhance and add to their work. I see lots of portfolio's and show reels using the same music and it gets a little tiring :P.

The music can loose its uniqueness :P

For editing, I work with Ulead Media Studio PRO, it's an excellent video editing software.

The music is from "Pirates of the Carribean" by Klaus Badelt, but I do bellieve that this composer is very inspired by Hans Zimmer :)

By the way the music composer who will do the final soundtrack for "Code Guardian", Kai Hartwig (http://www.hartwigmusic.de/) has a style very similar to the excellent Zimmer's music.

Excellent. Camera work, the quality of the models/textures/environments, effects, really top-notch work.

Are you compressing yourself? Long time ago I remember using your project and some of ours to get the engineers at DIVX to compress stuff for us. In return they use it for their theatre.

I've always found your site slow... and that's when there wasn't something big going on. Write me about SCIFI 3D hosting your new teaser too. It's always a pleasure to add some good original work too.

Dr.Jones and I were discussing and thought maybe there could be more attention to speed. Those mustangs were pretty fast. It reminds me of the PEARL HARBOR movie. It was a bit more intense. I assume you guys are maybe using it as a reference?

Holy crap! It's awesome. Can't wait to see the whole short.

BTW I don't really agree with the comments about the robot looking out of scale. I have previously watched both trailers and it looks huge to me.

There is the one shot at 21 sec where you are pulling back from the robot showing the planes flying around it. It does look smaller there for a sec. A giant robot from 1000 ft up is just going to look smaller. I think it's fine. The cut is just so short that your attention is on the robot and the planes. You don't have time to notice all the trucks, jeeps, crates, etc on the ground to give it more scale.

Awesome work!

Thanks again for such appreciation, to everyone!

Julez4001, yes I do have a full time job, I'm hired as Lead Senior Artist in a local video game developer company, we mostly work on racing games.
My office working hours are about 8, when we don't have tight scheduling, so I have the evening and part of the night time to work on it.
Depending on the complexity of each shot, I can work for a day or two on a single shot.
About how long I'm working on it, well, a LOOOONG time, so far is more than one year, and it will took several months to complete it!
Many times I'm like: "I will never finish this, this is too huge...", but after all, I go further, wouldn't be wise to abort the project right now.... Call my crazy. :p

MajinPunisher, no actually I never posted any tutorial I'm not so use to it, if I will do something like that you will certainly know from my site :)

As I said, the music is from "Pirates of the Carribean" by Klaus Badelt, the track is "He's a Pirate!"

Hi Zoo, has been a while!
Yes definitely "Pearl Harbor", especially the real buildings from the original location, were been a reference. About the "Mustangs" speed, I'm always fighting with WW2 experts about what is believeable and what is not, so isn't always an easy task to meet the right balance between realistic and entertaining, I do prefer the second approach.
After all, a giant robot in a period movie is enough weird already.
:D

Gamoron, I will definitely make a DVD from it, I'm doing "The Hunt" DVD already...

Incredible!!! I can't help but admire your dedication to your craft and all the hard work - it's amazing.

CEE-GEE,
My compliments as well on an outstanding job! I was wondering something about the shot (about 11 sec. in) of the three mustangs flying together over the fields and trees. Are you using billboards for the trees or is that geometry. They look fantastically real. Your ground textures are great.

And also, a question in general about working with such large sets and the textures for them...are you able to get in close on your set with out the textures pixelating, or do you have different geometry and textures for the close ups, like when the soldier is running screen right near the beginning?

All great stuff, and the lighting is beautiful. It really has that feeling of, when I was young, watching war movies set in the South Pacific. Something about the light and colors give exactly the same feeling.

Thanks,
Mahlon

Thanks for your appreciation Mahlon.

The trees are flat cards with tree bitmaps applied on them.

About the models on large sets, some of them can stand closer shots, some others are designed only for long distance shots.

Most of the time the large use of camera "shaking", covers some of the details lacks in the closer shots.
By the way, usually, I work with large textures, because with such a number of different shots, I never know how I will get close to a specific piece of set.

Here I've included pictures of some render I've done to show you some of the main buildings used.

this is trully impressive Cee Gee.....i'm using MAX and when u told what s/ware u r using...i'm like wtf!!!! can MAX do that?? must take a very long time......anyway, i like to know how long u spend time on pre-pro?

CEE-GEE
04-08-2004, 07:55 AM
Hi dazrenius, thank you :)

I spend a good amount of time in pre-production.
Even if in a rough way, I do prepare several sketches on paper for the main characters, in this case for the robots.
Before working on the shots, I also prepare storyboards, they're really rough (I don't have time to refine the drawings) sketching them on paper. Storyboards are tremendously crucial to bind the action together and also to get an idea on how many shots do you need for certain sequence.
Usually I split the movie in segments:
i.e.
-Intro
-Sighting
-harbor attack
- P-51 attack...
and so on.

I arrange the working folders this way, and using the same convention for every shots, both for final uncompressed avi and Max scenes.

Of course I also do a lot of tests to see how to achieve a specific effect or shot, during the pre-prod phase.

Dodgeas3d thanks to you too for the appreciation!

Well, the rendering time for each frame can vary depending on the complexity of a scene.
It may take 30/40 secs for the simplest one, to 1 or 2 minutes for the most complex. (768x576 PAL is the res)
I always try to keep the rendering time under 2-3 minutes, with this amount of shots I couldn't afford a highest rating.
By the way, consider that I usually render the background elements in a pass, the middle ground in a second pass, and the foreground for the final pass, keeping the previous render as uncompressed AVI. Yes it's weird but I have more control over the scene this way.

only crit would be the colors. I kinda felt that they could be a little less saturated overall. would make it "darker", if you know what i mean.

but hell, you know, it kicks A**

Sorry for any inconvenience caused by my server being so heavily accessed.

I remind you the mirror in case you shouldn't be able to get it from Cee-Gee directly:

So much details! Can't wait to see the whole thing!

Just one suggestion, you should probably put that mirror link directly in your first post instead of the middle of the thread...

Anyways, Good job!!

Impressive movie but i also like the music.Does anyone know how the artist of the Music is called or where i can find this kind of .(..maybe melodic military ........)..music??(wwhoa a 4 times alliteration!!)

Thanks CEE-GEE; those buildings are nice. I have had to build an 11,000 foot runway and the camera gets fairly close to the asphalt. I think the texture is something like 700x30000 pixels because it needs to be all one map. Thanks for the info.

Grazie Jim! :scream:

D-Hawk, as I said the music is "He's a Pirate!", from "Pirates of the Carribean" by Klaus Badelt

I had no trouble downloading it. Just had to wait about a minute for it to start downloading.

Marco, you are amazing. Living proof that it's the artist, not the software. (Though a nice machine, or a render farm couldn't hurt ;) )

Anyway, I look forward very much to seeing this completed. You should do a mailing list, so we can all get the links (I assume there will be mirrors) in our email the minute it's released!

I would say hurry, but like that dude on Pixar said, "You can't rush art..."

(the self-playing chess guy, if you haven't seen toy story2)

KEEP GOING!!!

CEE GEE, umm...WOW! I keep watching this trailer over and over and over and over and over and over Again (whew!, I can't breath)

Your work is absolutely a big source of inspiration. I am not usually a big fan of photorealistic animation but this one got me cornered.

looks great. i especially admired the human run cycles, the scenery (the excellence of the clouds, water, etc...) and the camera work is pretty cool too!

keep up the sweet work!

Bravissimi!

non vedo l'ora di vedere il film terminato. E' incredibile la quantità di elementi e la ricchezza di ogni singola immagine.

davvero complimenti.

sono certo che se aveste i mezzi e le persone, fareste sfigurare anche pixar, pdi e company.

Great work as always

But watch the movement of the aircraft... it looks a bit unnatural here and there (P-51 fying between mech's legs for example).

Attention to detail on the buildings is great, btw!
Looking very much forward to the final animation!

As to the choice of music... I am a great fan of Hans Zimmer's music, so rock on! :)
Seen the Thunderbirds trailer yet? More Hans Zimmer music! Can't get enough! :)
