perhaps it's because there's not too much going on in the pic. Why does it take so long to render? Looks like the model shouldn't be that complex?
How bout adding some mines in there or sumthing?

Much better.
Add some particles to make the water dense.
Something is still wrong with the light or the colors. Just cant put a finger on it.

You should add DOF (depth of field). It would make a big differents.
Add some "glow" effect to make the enviroment little more dense.

IMHO the mines are useless for the image, the early version was better, simple as that. By the way I think the traditional old underwater mine (the "sea-urchin like"sphere) would fit better than those in the last image.
