View Full Version : new to 3D need some feedback
GettinThar 04-04-2004, 02:16 PM I just got Animation Master a month ago and i am creating a cave for a movie I am doing with my friends. I am new at this and would like some advice on how to make this cave look more realistic. I dont know what to add to it that could make it look less plain.
Here is the pic (http://www.freewebs.com/snaturalproductions/FeedbackCave.jpg)
Thanks in advance!

I wanted to check out your work but for some strange reason it sends me back to this thread in a new window whenever I click on the link you have provided. :(

Alrighty, from what I can see, the background needs to have some geometry that is similar to the bridge. You have the detail up close, but the smooth cave walls really just leave your attention looking for more. I think if you match the surroundings of the foreground, you'll be on your way. Do that, and then we'll see where to go from there.
Other than that, it looks like your on your way. And don't worry if you get frustrated with it, like you said, you're new to 3d, so the learning aspect is there. Keep it up.
thatīs the right link: http://www.freewebs.com/snaturalproductions/FeedbackCave.jpg *copy and paste*
From what i can see it looks ok! Can you please render it a bit brighter? that would be very helpful
*waiting for updates*

Looking cool, I like the mood. Maybe try rounding off the corners of the doorway-arch, making it irregular, could help a lot. Maybe a glow from above or below too, of a contrasting color could really help. Nice start!

Ok I tried to make the walls more rough and this is what I got while playing with some materials. I plan to place more of the cave spikes elsewhere but I wanted to show some WIP. I made it lighter in the cave but I would really like some feedback on how I could make it look better. thanks in advance!

Looking better already. My next suggestion would be trying to brighten the scene alittle. Fill light would be best, unless of course you konw where you'd want to highlight with a form of key light.
Another thought is your 'platform' like structure infront of the door/tunnel. I'd say the top edges of that are a bit too uniform, and a maybe a bit to sharp compared to the style of the rest of the geometry. You may consider creating some variation in there by moving some of the verties up or down a little to show greater variation.
I would also suggest adding bump maps to your cave walls. If those large black speckles are from a bump map.. I think you may want to increase the tiling for them to give them the appearence of greater detail. BTW, what type of material are you using to produce those textures?
Another helpful trick would be for you to research and see if your application has the ability to render with "depth of field". Perhaps a bit too advanced, but still, you've gotta learn about it some time.
But other than that, I'd say you're on your way. I'll be looking forward to your next update.
g'night

I use Animation Master to make my 3D models. I do know that it supports depth of field but I have never actually used it hehe. The Bump map I am using for the walls is a plugin for the program called Alibib: Dented. I have just been messing around with that to see what kind of output comes out. I will post another WIP after I get home from school hehe.
