View Full Version : problem w/ flickering light during animation
hikaru78 04-04-2004, 12:29 PM i went ahead and animated a turnaround spin of one of my textured models using 3ds max. i used a simple three point lighting setup, but for some reason, during the animation, the lighting and shadows seem to flicker....as if a torch was lighting the scene. what causes this? ive heard of baking shadows and textures....does this having anything to do with my problem. i would appreciate some help on this. thanx

while it is hard to say for sure without seeing it, my guess would be that you have too low a resolution of a shadow map. This would cause the shadows and light to appear to flicker each frame as the shadow map is recalculated for each frame. What you see as flicker is the small amount of the shadow map, which is on your character, changing each frame.
ways to fix it: turn up the resolution of your shadow map, or bring your lights closer to your character, or set the shadow type to raytraced.
if you stick with the shadow maps, you might want to set the bias setting to .01 as this will give you tighter shadows, more closely connected to the character.
