View Full Version : Evolution: Looking for modeller who can do cartoons
OK ... looks like I'm going to have to get this thing started. Here's how it works folks. 2D artists just post your images in a thread like this. 3D modellers who are interested in modelling the concept will post thier WIPs in the same thread. Pretty simple.
Here's a character of mine that goes back a few years & I always wanted a maquette of him made. A little back history ...
Prior to coming to CGTalk I spent way too much of my free time playing UO and moderating on the Stratics gaming network. This is my first character that I created and I played him almost exclusively for 4 years before finally getting tired of the game and it's idiotic changes.
The character's name is DeathRage and he had a reputation in game for dying quite often and in the most bizarre places under unusual circumstances.
http://kirt.cgcommunity.com/temp/deathrage.jpg
DeathRage had a following of loyal loonies who did (what some would call "suicide missions") frequent tours of the most dangerous dungeons and locations in the game. He was also a character in an on-line comic (hence the jester suit) & fan site for UO. He's a bit of a psycho but a genuine good guy who just enjoys hanging out with freinds (not unlike myself).
So, if someone wants to model this guy, it would mean the world to me. Ortho views are coming up. The pic above is how I'd like to see him posed.
Also ... if this character doesn't appeal to you, I'm sure I'll have a few more before the end of the month.

Hey kirt...I was wondering when somebody would post a concept to model!
The concept looks pretty nice! I like the background story. I'll give it a try....[opens 3d program]

I am liking this guy, i am going to hold off though for liek a week and see what other people put up, but so far you have my vote, I cant wait to see the sheets so I can get started. Peace
Katon
:argh: I was hoping to have orthos done today, but I worked another 14 hour shift yesterday and I'm so far beyond tired it's not funny anymore.
Maybe sometime this week. But for now, here's some shots of the character from the ever embarrasing web comic. Enjoy at my expense (some of these were my first works done with Photoshop. Amazing how much I've improved in such short time).

Look! Bottom right ... lenz flared! ACK!!

hehe those are cool Kirt.
faithfully awaiting the ortho's . . . I was wondering of you could add some sort of detail stuff on his torso, it feels kinda empty right now don't ya think ? perhaps some sort of leather crossstrap or whatever with one of them things people put their swords in hanging on his back ???
Yeah, I can move his sword thingy to his back. Not a problem. I was also thinking that you could model the diamond pattern on his shirt with a lightly quilted look. Otherwise it's not going to work on a flat surface cause there are no textures allowed.
Equinoxx
04-07-2004, 08:31 AM
Yeah was thinking the same think, sort of embossed diamond patern for instance the gray ones 'protrude' more then the black ones.
Hmmm ... I was thinking all of the same height. But that might work too. It would definately give it a more unique look.
I have a posed head ortho done, but can't upload it until tomorrow. Do you want the body ortho in this pose or just standard DaVinci pose?
Equinoxx
04-07-2004, 12:47 PM
davinci would be lovely as it's easier to follow it when modeling. the pose will be done with rigging.
atcually, I think I understand now what you mean with quilted and it might work equally good I guess as what i offered. might even look less weird. Guess it's something I'll need to try out. Hope I can use displacement based on a texturemap and then collapse that to a mesh [bake displacement ?] never tried that before.
I wonder though how much of it will be visible, as I understand that details that are to tiny get overlooked in the conversion at 3d-art-to-part
we'll see.

Right..Ive done some head modelling, nowhere finished yet tho. When im (almost) done with the head, Ill change the other side of it, to create asymmetry which we are seeing in your concept :)
http://www.planetsideimages.com/uploads/deathrageprogress1.jpg
Wow you're fast! I guess I'm going to have to get that body shot up real soon. :D
A couple of things to critique. No upper lip showing. His mustache is really thick and bushy which conceils his upper lip. I think I drew his ears too small in the ortho views. If you look at the color samples above he has bigger ears (my fault). And the eyebrows could be positioned down more so you don't see as much of the upper eyelid/brow.
Other than that, I'm amazed at how you've managed to capture the character so well. Fantastic! :applause:

The embossed/quilted diamond pattern should look pretty good in the real part as long as it's bold enough.

Sorry to dissapoint you equinoxx, but I had to model something :p Waiting for your model...!
I modelled the shield skull on his legs (they were pretty easy to understand from the 3/4 sketch..). Im also thinking, kirt, if I build a cylinderical bevel for deathrage to stand for, There could be a couple of skulls lying around, like in your sketch. That ok?
and heres the shield skull

The jester looks better than mine, too....I better go tweaking now.. :)

Kirt, no probs man ;) just take the time you need. If need be i'd build him without orthos at all hehe.

HOLY! That's cool! Orthos ... you don't need no stinkin' orthos. Hehehehe. j/k - I know I said by the weekend I'd have them, what can I say ... I was wrong.
Looks real good though Equinoxx! The only crit I have is that the jester's hat looks fragile with those thin points. I'd prefer a thick and floppy hat (never cared much for the spindly look).
Equinoxx
04-22-2004, 10:57 PM
yeah I had planned to change those more towards your concept, never got round to it tho . . . will change them eventually ofcourse. 1 because floppy is cool and two because it would prove to be less fragile :)
cheers, I was hoping you'd like it :D

I think he looks real goofy in ortho views so please oh please tweek your meshes to add that extra toon character that's in the 3/4 view. Thanks.
I'll have some more drawings soon. Feel free to continue with minor changes to the design that you think will help your chances of winning the competition. Different pose is do-able as well.
Really impressive models so far.

Thanks for the orthos Kirt!
Some progress on the body...The feet/shoes need alot of work..
http://www.planetsideimages.com/uploads/wholeprogress4web.jpg
Looking good. I'd probably mix up the shape of the bones a bit so that they aren't identical and shape as needed around the foot. His knees look a little high, but I'm sure you're still working on these areas.
Keep up the great work. I'll try to get the side and back view up soon. Plus some details of his sword and whatever else I can think of.
Keep going back to that first image for reference. It has more info in it (I think) than the orthos.

04-24-2004, 11:53 PM
I'm lovin this challenge
Made some changes to the jestercap, to flatten out the point, but it's hard to see it from this FOV.
Figured it might be good to slightly form the bones around his lowerleg instead of having straigt bones, so that you'd actaully half his bones form a sort of shin + calve outline. [ehm hows that written in english again]
More updates soon [trying some different methods on gettnig the diamond padded shirt into 3d pads while maintaing the overal form of the body]

Looking good equinoxx...
I've been trying a few techniques too..
http://www.planetsideimages.com/uploads/diamondpatterntech.jpg
This technique is very heavy, the shirt weights in the render about 100 000 polygons... And I have to solve some mapping issues :) But I'll do the padding in the end, obviously...
Equinoxx
04-25-2004, 11:24 AM
I take it those pads are done via Displacement ??
there's got to be a better way . . . I tried it but as you can see, in the deaper areas you get some artifacting going on . . .
I was thinking perhaps using section object to project the diamond outlines on the mesh, then clean it up and follow that, reconstructing the bodymesh. Helluva work but it think it'd prove to be the cleanest result while keeping polycount to a minimum.
Way to go Equi!!
:arteest:
detonum
04-30-2004, 06:12 PM
Yes equi that's displacement. But I was experimenting it a bit more, and found out that you can get a better result if you add one subdivision after the displacement.
Alright, here is an update.
http://www.planetsideimages.com/uploads/wholeprogress5web.jpg
Teyon
04-30-2004, 10:58 PM
Remember gang, displacements won't carry over to the milled object. You have to actually model that stuff on the shirt. Looking good though.
Out of curiousity, you are planning to pose it after it's modeled?
detonum
05-01-2004, 07:36 AM
Teyon: Max has mesh displacement, so that it affects the mesh straightly. But im propably going to model it anyway :) .
I will atleast pose it. Not posing this character would propably not be a character at all, because of his rage :)
ilasolomon
05-01-2004, 03:13 PM
Actualy no need for displacment, with a few poligons for each diamone it is done, I did a quick test and I came up with this. :-)
You have to re-order/re-create the edge loops on shirt.

Sorry, but I'm propably going to have to give up. Im fed up with max, I'm in the process of moving to maya...I think Maya is better for my personal reference. I would continue the model in maya, but I think my skills in it aren't up to speed yet... (And, heh, it's impossible to fight against a moderator in the public voting :p )
So, Let's hope equinoxx finishes the model in time :) Good luck, the model is looking great.
Like Yves ... swamped at work. I've been pulling 12 hour shifts at work for about a month now. :argh: I got a couple days off at the end of this week. I'll get any last minute sketches and questions taken care of in time for the deadline.

Yves, I hope you can finish this guy up on what I've supplied. I think you're right on with the character concept even though I didn't get full side and back orthos done. The sword's sheath or scabbord (whatever it's called) is really optional at this point.
Add it to his back, hip or leave it out ... I don't care. I hardly drew the character with it anyway because he had no use for carrying a sword casually ... he was always in the heat of battle with someone or something.
As for the sword itself, I always imagined it to have a bone handle or something similar in appearance to a bone forearm and hand grasping a spherical gem at the end. Again, optional details since the character used many different types of magic swords. I really like the blade you've modelled so far.
What's important is to represent the character in a 3D model and I think what you've gotten done is superb and I couldn't ask for much better. Hope you have time to finish him.
Here's my final composite for submission:
http://kirt.cgcommunity.com/temp/deathrage-final.jpg
Oh ... and it was stupid of me to think that I would have time to work on this the past couple days. I had surgery done on my sinuses and I was figuring an easy couple day of laying around so I could finish drawing. Well, for those who don't know ... it felt like someone pulling my wallet up and out through my nostrils. I spent the last couple of days in a vicotin enduced delirium. Sorry. :hmm:

Hmm I hope i have time to finish him up, need to rig him + add those darn armor patches for which i still haven't found time to think about.
on the brightside, it's a still model, so I might be able to fudge it with the rigging and do a quick hack to get him into position, same with the pads, might be able to just slab them all on as singlepiece mesh . . .
luckilly, monday is a free day here so i might have time then [and quite possibly sunday.
Not going to finish, Yves?
Oh well, maybe you can finish it later. I'd still like to send this off to 3DArtToPart to get a print. The price is right, I may be able to afford a print for you. Thanks for your try.
