As a few of you know, I work in the theatre as a set designer (and part time costumer as well). A few weeks ago, I recevied word that, thanks in part to the way I'm pushing computer technology in theatre design, I'm being considered for a Theatre Communications Group/National Endowment for the Arts Grant for Career Development for Designers and Directors.

On the application, it was asked what I would do with this grant, and one of the options I noted (and apparently the one that caught their eye) was, given theatre's ephemeral nature, the CGI conversion of classic set designs for study by design students, along the lines of samples like these, which are studies for my design for TREASURE ISLAND for Theatre Cedar Rapids:

I just thought you folks might like to see a use of 3D that's a little outside the box and that's starting to get a bit of attention in areas other than film and games.

Great idea....as you can make your proposed changes in the digital world before making any actual changes to the sets.
And they can get a chance to see how it looks before the actual changes are made.
Good luck with the grant.....

Bredro: Thanks. Actually, that's been my long suit in this career, the ability to provide directors with highly detailed models in real 3D space, under actual theatre lighting conditions (I've built a library of presets that mimic RW lighting intruments that, unlike the ones used in VectorWorks, make allowances for edge diffusion and gel colour). If the director requires it, I can also build animations to show how a particularly tricky set change will look. (To that: every spring I give a talk at a university for the graduating theatre students, and one thing they all love is the two-minute HELLO DOLLY: nothin' but the set and lighting changes). As simple as it might seem to folks in 3D, this is cutting edge stuff for the stage world.
