View Full Version : My Knight of Old
Pinky_Powers 07-09-2002, 07:14 PM I've been doing updates on this in the Finished Gallery, but here I am now, looking for many critiques. Have at it.

And here is a close up of the head area.

Good shading
I think that the head is too large or the body too small. The torso should come down a little more, it's somethign like one head down to the nipples and another to the belly button? Your torso is only about 1 1/2 or so heads. But this would be quite a major change and difficult to do, without today losing your pictures 'additute'.
Also his right hand looks a little odd, the palm should be closer to the handle to get a grip on it. It looks like he is holding the handle with his fingers, which would be difficult to steady.
I really like the mesh under the armor, and the shoulder plates :) and the head is just awsome.

His hands are a little small. The the end of the sword closer to us should be exaggerated more, to give better depth. His armor looks a little thin very tight to the skin. you could try increasing the nose too. Try to add more cross hatching, smudging isn't all that professional, little kids can even do it. Minimal use of it is fine. Other then that it's a very good drawing, improve on what I just mentioned and the next work will look great.

Thank you for these comments, they have been some of the most helpful tops and critiques I have ever been given.
By the way, what is Cross Hatching?

Here's a quick example I did. On the left I used cross hatching. On the right I used the smudging only. The left is a fuller drawing. Remember smudging isn't taboo, it's aloud but just keep it kinda of minimal, or accentuate it well with cross hatching.

Is it a good idea to then use my blend stick over the cross hatching? Because I DONOT want the comic scetch cross hatched look, I was going for a much more real look with this drawing.

Pinky that is not the comic cross hatch look i did. Do you know Art History? Have you had formal training? That is how people are trained to draw when they go on to University, Art School or College. Tell you what, you continue to keep smudging.

hey, don't take offence at what I said. Ok?
Look, I have not gone to a college for art training, I do hope to someday. But when I do, they can tell me all they want that "cross hatching" is the BEST way to shade a picture, but that does not make them right. The way I shaded this picture is probably not the best way either, but that Cross Hatching way is NOT the look I was going for, there must be another way that is still "proper"
Any more help on this subject of shading from people who know more than one way to shade?
