better quality, smaller file; lower quality, larger file?
i thought those parameters are the like: "the better quality the lower size"...
Are u trying to say something about quicktime? ;)
Anyway, downloading the file...

Downloaded! It's amazing! oh i love that! unfortunately, it was hard to me to understand some of his words... english isn't my mother's tongue, and he sometimes doesn't speak clear enough... or atleast clear enough for me...
Anyway, excellent work!

I don't know what they feed you Ringling kids but it certainly makes me wish they would accept transfers, since I wanted to two years ago!
Very nice. Odd idea and I hope you weren't really expecting people to listen to the dialogue. Maybe it's just me but there's a lot going on and I didn't pay one lick of attention to what he was saying except very few snippets. That's not really a bad thing, as it's very interesting throughout so even not coming out of it knowing what he was speaking about, it was still good, and I assumed it was some Shakespeare anyhow.
Congrats on finishing and a great piece.

I dont know why the white rabbit doesn´t like the dialogue ... the words and the scenery are supporting each other very well I think
nice work in detail - you did a brilliant job on the timing

I didn't say I didn't like it, I said I didn't listen to it. I was distracted by everything going on in frame. It was very visually engaging and the dialogue is very wordy, so it's hard to focus on both, in my opinion. I liked the feel of it though and had no problem with the dialogue necessarily. I was simply critiquing the fact that is might be a bit "busy" and it might be something to keep in mind for future projects. It may be that I'm the only one who had this 'problem' so maybe it doesn't matter!
thats a really amazing work.
i love the artwork with the props. the sun got rays that look like the knifes.great!
also the animation, and facaial expression is well done...i have to watch it again ;)
btw. at the end the sound of the .mov is horrible distorted, maybe a download error.

You are very talented, that is one of the top 10 best things I've seen. Very good work!
i can't download it:shrug:
mimo8: I dont believe that whiterabbit.obj didnt like the dialogue
but that he was too distracted by the animation to pay any attention to it. I find that as a compliment. There are three ways to look at storys.
1. The words are the story and that they are enhanced by action to help carry the story.
2. Vise versa the Animation holds the story and words are just a complimentary aspect of the story.
3. Or you watch it for its entirety. Words. Action. Everything.
derekjr: Very nice. The only thing I see out of place is fact that your special thanks is cut off. I know that is sad but its all I have in the form of a critique.
**You Ringling boys need to cut it out!! Your makin' me sick with you nice little stories and awesome lighting and texturing!! I mean enough is enough!!

I don't think it's over "busy" - i mean, that's the idea of exagerating those theatre-like effects. So, if u decide to do it, so do it till the very end!
Anyway, derekjr, can u pls post the words he says?

Derek, YOU rock. Deh!
Congrats on a job well done. All of your hard work definately payed off with this piece! The acting, the timing, the dialogue which you wrote, is brilliantly pulled together with the animation. This is an intelligent acting piece which deserves much recognition.
Congrats with getting into the best of Ringling as well. You will go very far in this industry. Keep up the good work!
always,
Ron

I don't remember when i've seen better facial animation/lip synching.....very very well done. Gives the main guy tons of feeling.
Oh and the lighting/modelling/texturing is great as well of course.

Thanks for checking it out everyone, and all of your supportive comments...sometimes you work on something for so long and you forget what made it interesting in the first place :)
doe: i did check the quicktime file , and there is an audio glitch during the credits i'll try to get fixed. thanks for the heads up
as far as the dialogue goes...I was given much warning about making it as clear as possible. I had to balance between wordy shakespearean language (for mood) and clarity (to communicate), so I understand if some of it gets lost.
~Derek
That's quite amazing, Did you model and animate the whole thing?

THAT is great animation. I watched it again and again and again.
One question: Could somebody write down the monologue? I don't understand much of it, because English is not my native language.
Thanks a lot for this fantastic animation. Ciao,

YES! im glad someone recognized it...the insane amount of work we had in preproduction actually prompted me to make this piece, and Desiderata was something that would always make me see the light at the end of the tunnel. I thought it applied to many things in life as well, and would make a good ending.
For those who wanted the script:
"Where to begin? The mind...it harbors countless grievances.
Alone, it dwells on these sorrows, and..and...and amplifies them!
However, i suppose a confidant could aid in relieving the burden...
But! experience has proven otherwise.
Well, i can bear my own misfortunes anyhow.
But-b-b-but...no man is an island!.....right?
If virtue does exist, one musnt be utterly blind to it. It's just...it's
it's....it's just feeling as though the weight of the world is borne upon one's own shoulders!
What you must understand is, whether or not you realize it, the universe is unfolding as it should!"
Ringling works closely with the local Florida Studio Theatre for acting workshops, and one of the actors, Tom Demenkoff, was generous enough to donate his time and talent to the voice.

With regard to Animation, that is probably one of the best if not the best "animation" I've seen come out of a student. You have a great grasp on timing, weight, posing, overlap, and all the little things that make animation sing.
Everything is top notch, the performance(acting/animation), models, lighting, etc. Despite that, I can't say I cared for or even understood the story. But, I don't want to take away from what you've accomplished because the animation is simply superb, and that makes the short enjoyable enough for me to watch again.
Great work.

I really enjoyed it. I thought you did a great job acting out the drama in your character. I was just wondering what your plans for the futur are? You seem to have a grerat amount of skill. I look forward to seeing your name in the credits of some movies in the futur. Great work. Please post more at this website.
is ringling advertising??? this is like the third ive seen recently by the way how is that school?
There isn't much to say that hasn't already been said. It's a great piece, especially 1)some of the concepts 2) the animation itself.
However, there isn't a coherent story or thread in the piece. It seems explicitly a piece for those checking out your animation skills. Of course, most reels are like that, but since you included dialogue, I expected a better narrative.

04-03-2004, 10:12 PM
The narrative is great - it's a dramatic monologue! If you're having trouble watching and listening at the same time then maybe you should play it with your eyes closed a couple times. Very great job, Derek, I loved everything about your short! I hope someday I can produce something of that caliber.

If that's directed towards me, I don't have trouble keeping up with both. I just don't find it compelling.

I don't know if anyone cleared this up or not, I didn't read every post but it seems that people are having trouble seeing a "story" in this...
HUH?
The whole monologue is just a guy acting out and talking about the world being not very fun. He is full of sorrow and the props show that... the rain, the clouds, the swords, him carrying the weight of the world
THEN, it ends with everything brightening up and the music is happy.
"The universe is unfolding as it should"
with a pullback of the whole set moving around.
How can you NOT see a beautiful story in that. I almost feel bad having to explain it
