Depends on the platform. AVI is the only supported Playblast format on Windows NT.
Maya only renders out uncompressed QuickTime files in IRIX.
You can always play with the different compressors in the playblast option box.
Window > Playblast (option) > Viewer - compression.
If you already knew this, I apologize for wasting your time :)

you can pretty go frame by frame if you use fcheck to do playblasts....... you know you can control the playback speed using the mouse?
You can also set your own looping points... its quite good really.

Sp factory....Yeah I have heard of that viewer. I will give it a try.
sigma....no waist of time...thanks for your input. I have all ready tried playing with various formats. Still working on it.
Krugar.....Yeah, i am aware of the features in f-check. But I would much rather use QT. I have it working at home but I can't rember how I set it up. (on an NT box) What i will do is investigate how I did it and apply that to my work box.
QT you can set a loop between a certain # of frames very quickly with out haveing to reload a certain # of frames. Needless to say when tweaking animation this is a awesome feature.

Hi, I think if u right click on ur timeline bar and go to ur playblast options u can change from avi to quicktime. Im not completely sure (and don-t have maya installed on this machine to check that out), but I think u can switch it that way.
Hope it works man!

Try sending the question to the Maya list. Highend3D has a page where you can sign up at http://www.highend3d.com/maya/listserver/
You can also view an archive of the list here http://www.highend3d.com/maya/archive/

To get the Quicktime player to be the default playblast viewer in maya you have to set Quicktime to be the default player for avi files in windows.

waltari ....
AAAAAAARRRRGGGHHH....Finally......Now I knew it was something simple....I did look in QT...Edit.....QT prefs....but what I failed to do is ( I am so embarrassed) ..use the drop down box...for all of the options.
Either way...you did it. FIXED......some times the simplest thing gets over looked. thanks a bunch.

i found the best way was to use -
Intel(r) Video 5.10
Compression Quality : 100
keyframe : 5
Data Rate : 600
Makes decent quality avi's that play in Quickime
well it works for me!
Dunno why they can't just put a Quicktime Sorenson compressor in there for us!
