alright, alright. so i have another question. so sue me.

i have created a character and want to project a shape onto his body. i know that you can project onto a nurbs surface but maya laughed at me when i tried to do that with a polygonal surface.

the reason i'm asking is that i know you can stencil one polygonal shape onto another in a different 3d program (which will remain nameless so not to offend die hard maya users).

dude.... sweet.

Uh, sorry to break this to you, but Maya doesn't seem to be able to project a nurbs shape onto a polygon surface. I'm not positive, but Maya 3 Unlimited can't. I've tried. :thumbsdow

Both objects need to be nurbs. The same thing occurs when you work with booleans - Polygons only work with other polygons, nurbs only with nurbs.

www.highend3d.com has a mel script for maya that is like a shrink wrap...it takes so major tweaking, but it does work...
