And do they give you a gigabyte of space and Google's search capability?
With that kind of space, we should all move our cgtalk forum discussions to Google. :) We will then not fear of any thread entitled "The future of Lightwave" running out of space, if the thread is permitted to survive. :)

If this new 1GB Google email deal is true, then Google will be on to a winner.
I hope there is no crazy user license that you have to agree to. After Microsoft bought out Hotmail, they introduced some pretty weird rules. Like "all your content now belongs to Microsoft" and stuff like that.

www.spymac.com But the question is: For how long? Other than Google (or perhaps MS) I don't see anybody capable of pulling this of and actually keeping the user base happy.
Hey, even I could offer "1 GB free e-mail" from the server in my bedroom - but it doesn't mean I'll be doing it for very long...

It could be possible if they only allow you to send like 10kb file attachments!:D

Seriously, might as well stay with hotmail if the upload is only going to be 1MB or less. I never needed more that 3-6 MB of mail storage, but it would be nice to have bigger attachment options.
Hopefully the Gmail will come to pass. It sounds really cool.
With Gmail, you can send 10MB attachment in a single email, more than the entire hotmail or yahoo mailbox size. That's amazing. And of course 1GB space for each user.

Anyone who wants to avoid Google's search engine (in protest) can use the Teoma search engine, which is similar and some say better

I think Google deserves all the flak they are getting over this.

OK, i read the article on the privacy issues with google and if it turns out to be true then i will not be opening my account with them. But correct me if im wrong in that anyone who's up in arms about that is a bit silly. I mean, what did you expect? To get 1GB free email from one of the biggest companies in the world without them having an alterior motive? Get real people and use your head. When you get reward point from the supermarket and get free gifts, dont you think the company is gaining a hell of a lot more from you then you are from them?

thanks for the http://www.teoma.com/ link Wanker :surprised ( interesting name ). They have cookies which are only up to 2015 which is less than the google 2037 one.
I thought at one time google was the best, and well it was really. It used to come up with great links, but has anyone else noticed that now it ONLY give your .COM links?? you try anything and you will only get CORPORATE links! that is another reason why google sucks so much and should be avoided like the plague. As thethule said, if its for free then there is a catch, as always.

BUT
A lot of people have found out how to spoof the google search algorithm in order to rank themselves higher than they should. I run across way to many links which have nothing to do with what I am searching for and in turn end up being false URLs which send me to another corporations seach list.

as far as search engines go, it is the best out there... yes people can fool it's algorithms some, but not too much... I've actually bounced to the top of google once or twice on some really specific phrase keywords, some by accident, some on purpose... it's funny to see youself bounce on top of google searches on accident when you are ending up above the people that really are trying or should be trying to get number one spot by spoofing, etc... If I google for mastermesh, I find myself above mastermesh inc. somedays, and otherdays below... but it's funny that that's just a nick that I made up way before I ever l ever learned about that company... also, it's funny to google for my name, "Jeff Thomann" and see what comes up besides my own stuff...

heh I like searching for my nickname. I occasionally find myself quoted on the web every now and then. Slashdot had a story about UFO sightings in Scotland. I said "It's just a few Thermians visiting the birthplace of Mr. Scott." That made it on a site. heh.

So, Google's Gmail will get hold of your name so they can link it with what you are searching for. They will also archive your searches, which they could use in the future.
I think that's too high a price to pay in return for 1GB of "free" email space.

I still like the old AltaVista (http://www.altavista.com/web/adv) search engine for boolean inquiries.

What if you were searching for some embarrassing medical treatment that you didn't want everyone to know about?
Who knows how long Google would keep this information for. In a hundred years will people be entertained by looking at what we were searching for?
Believe it or not, the most popular search item of today is "Paris Hilton". People want to see all those nudie pix. Should we "out" those people, and let the world know that they were searching for nudie pix of Paris Hilton?
Who hasn't searched for something that they wouldn't want everyone to know about?

How would Google let everybody know what I've been searching for? They're not going to make that public. Even if they did, so what? This informations' availble anyway. CGTalk right here could see what I was searching for. All they have to do is look at the logs.
This isn't a new threat to your privacy.

The issue is more that Google may in the future sell your info to certain companies. With the amount of spam we have now, could you imagine jow much more you would get if Google sold the info concerning all the searches you ever did to a spam company? And what if you were looking up something a little suspect, like piracy or something? With all the recent crack-downs on digital piracy, Google could sell the info to a government agency and they could prosecute you, even if you didn't download anything.
Also, people who make the same searches alot can be tracked by their search pattern. It's scary stuff when you think about it.
NanoGator
04-07-2004, 01:51 AM
Google's not going to sell your info for the simple reason that they'd go out of business rather quickly if they did. As for tattling on you to the gov't, that won't fly either. Searching does not equal guilt.
No, it's not so scary.

Hate to get polictical, but these days even if I make a joke about blowing something up I can get dubbed a terrorist. Governments can use alot less evidence than 'searching for something on Google' to start invading your life.
And Google wouldn't nessecarily go out of business. Alot of business goes on behind the scenes so you wouldn't really know what could happen. The US Government could make several 'donations' to Google in exchange for an 'understanding' when it comes to sharing evidence. It's not like they haven't done it before.
Apologies if I'm getting too political here ^_^;;

Groups Slam Google's New E-Mail Service
Quote:
"Google Inc. hails its new e-mail service as a breakthrough in online communication, but consumer watchdogs are attacking it as a creepy invasion of privacy that threatens to set a troubling precedent.
Although Google's free "Gmail" service isn't even available yet, critics already are pressuring the popular search engine maker to drop its plans to electronically scan e-mail content so it can distribute relevant ads alongside incoming messages.
Privacy activists worry that Gmail will comb through e-mail more intensively than the filters widely used to weed out potential viruses and spam.
Gmail opponents also want Google to revise a policy that entitles the company to retain copies of people's incoming and outgoing e-mail even after they close their accounts.
The e-mail scanning, which Google says will be handled exclusively by computers, has raised the most alarms, partly because it seeks to capitalize on messages sent by people without Gmail accounts.
Google intends to deliver ads by analyzing what's being discussed. For instance, an e-mail from one friend to another talking about an upcoming trip might include links to hotels or airlines.
Gmail has a "definite creepiness factor," said Ari Schwartz, associate director of the Center for Democracy and Technology.

Well spymac's 1GB e-mail service opened up on Monday. All seems to be well there, and as far as I know they don't scan your mail. You can also send attachments up to 10MB. Their registered users jumped to 100,000 from 60,000 this week alone. But their site is really for hardcore mac fans, so PC people probably won't like logging into that site everyday. Pretty soon everyone will be jumping on the 1GB bandwagon. Pretty cool anyway...

G,GB are standard abbreviations for gigabyte (GB is standard). I'm not sure what Gb is an abbreviation for, unless your are talking about Gibytes, which is 1,073,741,824 bytes instead of the 1,000,000,000 bytes found in a gigabyte

aha
it is easy to understand
that just a word puzzle.
and do you remenber the Modem we used(i just use it now)
the Mark on the Modem tell us ,it is the 56Kb speed.
and the ture speed just not more than 7KB
so 1Byte=8bit,
the 1Gb=1/8GB=128MB
(one Byte include eight bit)
and i am not good at math:cry:
