Main Entry: evo·lu·tion
Function: noun
one of a set of prescribed movements a process of change in a certain direction : UNFOLDING a process of continuous change from a simple to more complex state : GROWTH the process of working out or developing
The Contest
This contest is for 2D & 3D artists to work in collaboration towards a finished character model. The theme, "evolution" describes the process of developing a character concept towards a finished 3D maquette. Entries are not required to depict "evolution", this is an open-ended challenge. Any character design (flying pig, dancing toothpaste, death robot, barbarian snail, sci-fi thong babe, etc.) is acceptable.

See the cyborg project thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19292&perpage=15&highlight=cyborg%20minichallenge&pagenumber=1) for an example of a previous collaboration contest which this contest is based upon.

The Rules
It is important for participants to read all of the rules and review specifications on 3DArtToPart.com (http://www.3darttopart.com/modeling%20info.php) before starting on their entries. Failure to follow the rules may lead to disqualification from final judging.
READ ALL THE RULES HERE AND SPECIFICATIONS REGARDING MODELLING FOR 3DArtToPart! (I can't stress this enough!)
Entries must be a character. Genre & style is at the discretion of the artists. Keep in mind that the final result must be suitable for creation into a 3D maquette by 3DArtToPart.com.
2D & 3D entries must be submitted to this thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=134883) together. It's up to you to decide between your team who will post the final images (3D artists may want to assume this task since the 2D art should be finished prior to their completion). Each entry must have a 2D & 3D image submission (see below for more info).
There must be a unique 2D/3D artist collaboration for each entry. For example: Bob (a 2D artist) & John (a 3D artist) submit an entry. Bob and John are not allowed to work together on another entry. However Bob is allowed to collaborate with another 3D artist for a second entry. John is allowed to collaborate with another 2D artist for a second entry.
- Artists can enter as many times as they would like as long as the above rule is followed.
- 2D & 3D work can not be done by the same artist on a submission.
WIP threads should be started by 2D artists in the Collaborative Team Projects forum.
- WIP thread titles for this contest should begin with "Evolution:" followed by whatever you feel is appropriate or is going to attract 3D artists to your concepts.
- 3D artists can post their WIP images within the 2D artist's thread.
- Multiple 3D artists can be posting within the same 2D thread.
- 2D artists who have multiple entries should post all of their concepts within the same thread.
- 3D artists can choose any available 2D concept to model.
Submissions
In order to keep this as organized as possible within the Collab forum, please follow these rules. Failure to submit your entry correctly will disqualify you and your team mate from final judging.
The deadline for this contest is June 1, 2004 12:00am PST. All entries must be posted in this thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=134883). Two image collages are required for each entry (one 2D and one 3D image collage).
- An entry that does not contain 2 images or contains more than 2 images will be deleted from the thread.
- Each image size must not exceed 800x600.
- 2D entry must have front, side, and back ortho views plus a posed illustration of the character. Additional detail views are optional.
- Color is optional on 2D entries.
- 3D entry must have posed views of the model at 45, 135, 225 & 315 degrees of rotation. Additional detail views are optional.
- 3D models are not textured or have any shaders applied (default shader only).
Each entry should include a link to the WIP thread. This is so that other members who are browsing the contest can quickly and easily find your WIPs if they want to know more about the entry.
Each entry should include the screennames of each artist who worked on the entry.
The Prize!
One completed entry will be chosen and 2 maquette sculptures of the finished model will be manufactured by 3DArtToPart.com. The artists for the chosen design will each recieve a maquette (one for the 2D artist and one for the 3D artist).
Judging will be performed by:
- CGTalk members via a public thread using this forum's poll option.
- CGTalk moderators and administrators via private ballot.
- Members of 3DArtToPart staff via private e-mail to a selected CGTalk mod or admin.
Winners are to be determined by CGTalk mods/admins & 3DArtToPart staff with consideration to the public poll, originality, creativity, execution of 2D to 3D and how well the model will finalize into a finished maquette sculpture.
COOL!

Since a long time I already wanted to make such a collaboration with one my friends (who is a grrreat character designer). We both are figures collectors! So here is the perfect opportunity!

Now let's try to find some time in the midst of our multiples personnal projects!

Just to know: is it possible for a single artist to do both character design and 3d modeling?

Kirt
04-01-2004, 03:51 PM
- 2D & 3D work can not be done by the same artist on a submission. Most of your questions are already answered.
So make sure you read and understand all of the rules listed above.

Thanks.

Is it allowed to have some sort of platform that he's standing on? A cliff or something (small cutoff or something)? Couldn't find that in the rules.

I hear you, I'm up to my eye balls in print work! Maybe a new challange should be to post your best CG-related student work!

Yes, I think a platform or base would be a good idea especially if the character's weight is not ballanced correctly. Or perhaps your character has very thin legs and a large upperbody.

3DArtToPart mentions this on the specs page, but there are ways to get around this. Say for example you have your character leaning against a wall or sitting on a box.

Floyd Bishop wrote an informative article for CGNetworks (http://www.cgnetworks.com/story_custom.php?story_id=1549&page=) back in Sept. '03 about the development of his model for IcePond Studios. Worth taking a second look if you don't remember or want more info on 3DArtToPart.

If the person working on the model doesn't have software capable of rigging but the person who created the 2D half does, is it acceptable for the 2D artist to take the model after it's completed to create the pose or will the person making the model be forced to model the character already in the pose?

Lordrych, if you're out there...now would be the time to PM me. :)

Kirt
04-02-2004, 01:41 AM
Well I suppose that's acceptable. It is a collaboration challenge afterall. The important thing is that 2 different artists work together to produce the final entry.

I think I would rather see it modeled in the pose by the 3D artist in this case. However, we won't hold it against you if the 2D artist wants to rig and pose the model.

No solo's at all huh? (I have no friends that can draw)

Kirt
04-02-2004, 06:44 PM
Once the 2D submissions start coming in you can select from any available concept that has been posted in this forum. It's not neccessary for you to already know someone who can draw.

If you have an idea for a character, you're more than welcome to contact any 2D artist on this board to see if they'll work with you to produce the ortho views.

I love the header/slash graphics y'all come up with for these challenges. They are wonderful art in and of themselves. :applause:

It sounds like we (3D artist) can just pick any 2D artist concept. Do we need to get concent and agree to join as a team, or is it just model whatever you like. SO basicaly, do we need the artist permision to make the 3D model. Just wanting to clarify. Also, does it need textured or is this just a straight model since it will be made as a sculpture, will texturing be part of the judging. Peace

Katon

Kirt
04-04-2004, 11:37 PM
2D artists, by posting a concept for this challenge, automatically give consent to for 3D artists to model the concept. So 3D artists only need to decide which concepts that they'd like to model. Pretty straightfoward.

No texturing should be done for this challenge. If you want to texture it after the contest is complete, then it'd be fine to continue in the thread after June 1st.

a little expansion of 'CgMonkeys' question.
can you make 2 characters, both in a very small scene. say for example, 2 characters fighting/chasing each other, and maybe a simple rock/table/carpet(or something else) in there?

like in alot of cartoon sculptures, here's a link to show an example:
http://www.wholesale-inter.net/1002.htm

cheers

Kirt
04-05-2004, 12:43 AM
You're limited to the size specs from 3DArtToPart. If you can get 2 or more characters in there with the detail that you want ... then go right ahead.

Cool challenge count me in:bounce:

@Kirt: just to clarify, if we can choose any concept to model,
and two people model the same concept is it then up to the
2d artist to decide which model will be submitted to the contest?

Kirt
04-05-2004, 04:58 PM
Ham-e - Not quite ... if 2 3D modellers submit the same model, then they will both be in the final judging. In which we'll pick the better of the two.

Equinoxx - I've already started a thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=135507), ortho views are coming up soon. If you have an idea for a character, I'm open to suggestions.

I'm a little confused as to where the WIP thread is supposed to be. On other contests I've done here, the WIPs are submitted to one giant thread...sometimes THIS thread. But I'm not sure if that is the case here.

Also, my buddy who is an artist has to sign up to cgtalk in order to participate, right?

Kirt
04-06-2004, 11:22 PM
loked & KungFu Hampster - Have your friend register a username. Otherwise we won't be able to determine if you're not doing all of the work yourself.

KungFu Hampster - Post your WIPs in a new thread withing the Collab forum (http://www.cgtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=73).

Kirt
04-07-2004, 10:33 PM

Hey Kirt
i was wondering, it is a little hard to keep track of the couple entries already in the team colab section, is there any way we could make a section under the team colab sectoin to orginize all the work in progrss threads for this or else they will be all jumble with the rest and it could get a litle messy. Just a thought.

Counting the 2 sticky threads at the top of the forum, there's less than 10 threads for this challenge. So I don't think a sub-forum for the contest is needed at this time.

Kirt

No no no no no ...

If you're a 2D artist, post your concepts. Any 3D artist that likes your concept will begin modelling it. Easier than trying to contact and arrainge partnerships between the two.

Sorry there's so much confusion, I thought it was pretty clear.

Zorrino

Sorry to post this but the folks working with me want an official nod on something....

...Orthos. Are back shots REQUIRED or only should be given if needed for the model to be made? Most of the sketches I've made hint at the backs of the models in the inital sketches but when it came time to do orthos, I only gave the side and fron shots for most of them. That seemed to be enough for all but one model really but once you've made one the other want too, so, strict requirement or just as needed?

Kirt
05-19-2004, 08:54 PM
Although it's important to show enough views to demonstrate all the important aspects of the character, I'm going to say that all views are not a requirement for the contest.

As long as you've supplied enough views for the modeller to complete the 3D without having to improvise a large portion of the character. You should be OK.

If you have a few minor tweeks to do to finish up get them done and posted within the next 48 hours (from this posts timestamp). I had a pretty rough week in the hospital ... so I'm just catching up on everything.

Going to be taking it pretty easy for awhile ... but on my first things to do is get final judgng going on this contest. Sorry, if this doens't make much sense ... pain killers work too dame good. :P
