Iím not sure if this first illustration will be a warm-up. The machine flesh will be subtle. The back story is this Ė Special Forces in the future will be both genetically and physically altered. Though advanced, they are not completely immune from the advancements in new weaponry. Their genetic alterations include greater lung efficiency, a liver that can filter most chemicals and so on. The physical alterations are performed while in adolescence. An organic kevlar mesh is woven in to the muscle tissue. This organic body armor allows the body to defect most bullets and shrapnel, though not completely effective against direct hits from much larger weaponry. A lubricant must flow through the body at all times. This is made possible by a mechanical attachment to the heart, which helps pump the lubricant. Though most of this will not be shown in this illustration, I hope you donít think thatís a cop-out, I wanted to create an illustration that wasnít only a character design but told a story. If this image doesnít meet the challenge specs, Iíll use this as a warm-up.

I'm not sure how much farther I will take this. I keep my work painterly. I converted to digital illustration a year ago and wanted to keep my work consistant with my oils and acrylics. I need help with one thing gang, Each time I hit the submit button for this thread, the lights go out and I hear crickets. It mat be an extensions problem. :-)

i agree with T.L (as usual it seems) youre just fast.

to the crits: its looking good, but i think you need to work around the moutharea somewhat. Those brown lines pokes out of the paint in a strange way.

Also i dont understand if the skin is grafted onto the mechanical body or if theyre repairing a robot, what im trying to say is: It deosnt feel like there is any muscles underneath the skin only metal. That may have been the way you intended it, and it looks cool, im just asking.

Russell_Collins
03-31-2004, 07:10 AM
I love the way this is shaping up. My only recommendation is something that should echo what others have said already...

Why is he wounded and what is causing him all that pain if he is almost all machine under that skin? If you set the scene in such a way as to imply or express overtly what is going on, the actual actions and (re-)construction efforts would make more sense. As for my perspective on it, I can't imagine what caused those wounds so I don't have any feeling of attachment to the image. I don't feel interested in what is going on beyond the skills of the artist at illustrating the actual machineworks and surgery.

This artifical Layer is between Skin and muscles.
Maybe its just me,... but don't ya guys see the guts in the abdomen wound?
Anyway,.. he also explained about that layer abough...

Great technique, and very impressive comoposition.

I think that you could have done more sketches (perhaps you haven't posted them), to find a more original way to merge the machine with the body.

E.T
03-31-2004, 09:14 AM
my bad: didnt really read the concept that properly.

If he is special forces, wouldnt it be nice with some kind of insignia on the pants? Or at least something that indicated a military background, a tatoo perhaps?

Ouch!

There is some real fine work going on here.

hydrophobic
03-31-2004, 03:11 PM
A disturbing scene!
You could make the scene mimic a truly violent war scene by having the lower half of his body destroyed exposing the mechanical parts inside kind of like the scenes in Vietnam where soldiers have lost limbs due to grenades and shrapnel. It would be even more inhuman and invasive looking if the surgeons were not human at all.
Itís a neat idea, and you have done some great work.

Woke up this morning to see a chorus of responses and thought to myself, woe dude (I can say that, I'm from SoCal) somebody is out there ;-) Thanks for the crits.

E.T. I like the tatoo idea, thanks man

T.Lee I think you got the overall concept that I was after - still wanting the Spec Ops to be vunerable, having human organs. I do paint fast. I took a day off from my other stuff to do this. Thanks! I'm new to the form, 2 months, I like your work

cuppacam - My attempt was to poke fun not Whine I've developed a thick skin over the years, my humor doesn't always translate

bonestudio - I do most of my drawing for this type of stuff in the computer, it has become a bad habit because if I don't save a sketch, i often don't have original drawings. I'm currently working on a project that I regret not doing more drawing in my sketchbook. Thanks for the reminder.

Russel - I wanted to do a snap shot showing the results of the battle, the type of weapon that caused the wound was of lesser importance to me. He is in great pain because he is still mostly human. Thanks for the feedback

Thanks All for the feedback. Woe I do feel the love now (again my attempt at humor.

Here is a second concept. This one will be a character design only.

Back Story Ė In the future, societyís over emphasis on sports and entertainment continues to grow at a ravenous pace. Self-control is a lost human attribute. War becomes sport. Gladiators are once again big business. If a gladiator fights well and loses a body part, his or her sponsor will have it replaced. If it is determined by the viewing audience that the gladiator performed poorly, they will suffer a terrible death. The final image will have a trading card design to it to show the crash marketing.

Cloths blocked in. I'll work on the face and other stuff tomorrow if I can fit it in. i need to rough him up a bit. he looks too young and soft right now. i just wanted to get the close up to snuff before bed.

T-Lee - Once my kids go to bed, my lap-top comes out and I paint like crazy on my own stuff. That and doing demos and working in animation in the past has given me the habit of working fast. I should slow down a bit and smell roses or coffee in my case.

New concept. This is a Sam Spade (film Noir type detective) meets Blade Runner meets Dawn of the Dead concept. A futuristic detective that is way-way-way past his prime. He body is deteriorating because he is so dang old. Mechanical parts are keeping him together. He will be placed against an interesting background. The drawing is rough because I like to feel my way through the paint process.

This is a first pass at the character, I will bring in the mechanics next. I thought a garish Hawaiian shirt would be a nice contrast to this image. That would move it away from the BladeRunner look. Sorry about that FlyingP, but I had a hunch to go that way. I'm going to add rain and more atmosphere.

Yes, go with the Hawaiian shirt. It gives your character some personality and depth. Also provides some great contrast and color in the picture. (this looks great in the landscape layout you have BTW.)

The detective wanted to keep his original eye, so it is suspended in the orbital cavity. Four prongs attached to electrodes allow the eye to move. More mechanics are coming.

Thanks FlyingP for confirming what I was concerned about. I had painted in a small cig. holder that is screwed into the top of his index finger. I was worried that it wouldn't translate. you can see it better in the close-up above. Thanks for the confirmation, I will need to make it more visable. By the way, we sound like we're in the same boat. I still paint in painter 6 and photoshop 6 because I like how I have set everything up for myself. Yeah kind of sucks having to upgrade for that reason. I'm happy with my set up too it's like the good old pair of sneakers that despite the holes and bits falling off are just too comfortable to throw out, the only thing that I don't like is that the G4 I have them installed on sounds like a 747 on full throttle  .

The wounded character is my favorite and i think it would probably look the best in the end. The tatoo needs to be in a different position i think. the falloff on the pec makes it look too distorted. its cool but i couldnt make out what it was supposed to be at first. just a thought. They all shred though. I would still love to see the detective when its finished. It has alot of character. Great work. You make it look effortless

Thanks guys, I think "Wounded" is the one so far, however the Detective does have a certain something that I like personally. I'm going to try a few more ideas out soon. Thanks for the FB.

Hear is a new concept, a young girl pulling off the flesh of one hand to reveal the mechanics. I'm just having fun with this stuff. This concept isn't the best, i'm just using it as an excuse to paint.

I got my niece to pose for me for this drawing. It was the last thing she wanted to do. I haven't decided what exactly to do with the hand. i might just start painting and let it emerge.

I like her face and expression a lot.

Even if this might not be your final machine flesh piece. Keep this one and finish it up some other day

Im not going to say whats wrong with that hand. Since this is only concept stuff.

Hey SideAche I love the stuff your doing here, it's so inspirational to me and I love your style and the whole feel of your art! It's excellent to see the process you go through as it's very helpful, Cheers!!

As far as you Idea's go in my opinion the wounded concept is the weakest, to me soldiers in the future and bionic implants don't do much for me. It's the best image without a doubt out of the three you've done, the composition and motion/animation are top notch!
The detective is my favourite, theres so much character there and I think the Hawainan(spelling) shirt is just such a great touch to the whole piece.
I loved the trading card concept for the Samurai, you should bring that back it was something really fesh and different.

Wow, another concept sketch. Are you on a rampage or what? I think the girl/hand piece could be nice, but it needs a hook (conceptual, not physical.) The juxtaposition of the cybernetics on the samurai, or the Hawaiian shirt on the smoker provide interest in both image making and storytelling. I think you might think to find that additional "thing" for the girl.

Just a thought . . .

just looked at your post now...

i like the first one that you started with personally.. its looking hype.

[and by this point, i'm starting to feel like you were... i'm getting like zilcho-response-oh with the exception of yours... which after looking at your thread very much flatters me... you got some nice stuff duder]

Thanks gang for the input. I will probably take this last one to completion when I have some time. I'm trying to squeeze these illustrations in during the evening when my kids go to sleep. Thanks Dozak for the reminder that this one needs a hook to bring you in. I like how the "Detective" ended up. I'll keep working.

Well, this one is going nowhere at this point. I'm just going to keep painting until something clicks. Sorry Dozak, I'm still trying to think of a hook. This one might end up being an exercise in painting if i can't figure out where I want to go with it.

whaoooww !
A long time i didn't came there !
"Contemplation" concept is a good one
perhaps it could be a girl in an hospital, and she awaking, push pulling the skin of her and and discover the mecanic !
the opposite could be interesting a girl with a lot of interfaces a lot of bionic which discover a real hand (perfect one) which have replace the robotic one and she could remove the bandages with the mechanic one....
Sorry for my frenglish... i hope you'll understand what i mean :)

I'm still searching for that hook on this one and still painting. Thanks guys for the complements, but you may be a bit generous on this one. I have a couple of directions that i'm going to persue. My first three concepts I had worked out before beginning. I just started painting this image without having worked out the concept and now I'm paying for it.

Hey gang, I hope that i didn't come across as unappreciative about the positive feedback on this image. i was just frustrated with beginning an image without thinking it through. I'm working on the dramatic lighting angle now. Thanks for the support even when I felt an image wasn't going in the right direction.

Your painterly style is an oasis in a dessert of 3D-rendered metal textures and overly wrought superhero features... and I'm not just saying that. (I'm typing it too!)

I'm definately favoring the Detective overall... but there's something about pealing the flesh off that robot hand (and the hand belonging to a cute little girl) that really seems to be working.

Reciprocate the bump sometime. ;)

Wounded is probable the best choice. It has a lot of interesting tension in it.

Falcorr
06-15-2004, 06:41 PM
Uhmmm... My choice is

Wounded! I prefer the painting technique and it looks like the most finished up of them.

Second would be detective.. That shirt is uplifting and unusual :)

Third that girl.

Last one samurai gladiator.. althought i really like the pic  but i dont feel like it looks like machine flesh somehow i think of just armored regular samurai.

Wounded has great facial tones.. Even the upcoming beard is showing :applause:
all those hands look really good  Most intense..

Detective also has cool atmosphere, but wounded is my choice :wavey:

I wanted to flush out a couple of more ideas, however I was under some tight deadlines on other stuff and blew off those ideas. This was a blast! I look forward to the next challenge. The work here is better than the other sites that I am involved in. CGTALK is very inspiring.

hmmm serious question...
I think the wounded is the best in technic, perspectivity and proportions also......allthough I can't explain why but my personal favorit is the detective....the mood, that sight is freezing me. A man with inner suffer.....the other(wounded) is just simple pain.
BTW congratulations man!!!
