this looks really good in my opinion - would look well on a website !

how many frames ? and did you automate anything ?

Really cool.
Are you planning on using this for anything, or just for research?
I agree, it would be cool as part of a site, over a background, or in the background of a page. I'm gonna try it sometime 'cause it's neat.

17 sec. Dance Rotoscoping (www.oraclewoods.com/donflores/40204-rotopop.swf)

well i finally got this done. i might have to change the color of the hands so you can tell whats going on a bit better.

i actually like the first one i posted here, looks better to me???

overall this is just a study, for a project i will be doing that deals with music and dancing figures...enjoy

i like both of them.
But i do like the first one.It looks cooler just seeing from the knees up moving.
That and i like the style you were using on the first one too. Much more movement in the first one, the second one seems to static with too many locks. (where you froze your body)

jackal - i agree completely, i was plannin on doing another where i use footage of myself doing liquid popping since it reads a lot better than doing more locking, like you mentioned. good call! ill try and get that done..as soon as i can, if this thread slowly goes away..ill eventually bring it back with wutever i got..so thank you!!! much appreciated

I really like the look of the first one. I get a really good 80's vibe from it. :)

The second one I really appreciate. (Pop and lock!) But I think since it's a sketch animation, it's hard to distinguish when the the dancer was "pop"ing and "lock"ing. Which is the essence of the dance. Perhaps you could have used some artistic liscense and exaggerate some of the gestures during these moments. But both are awesome.

Now I feel like listening to some hip-hop. Excellent stuff!

woyman - well thanks for the input!! ever since the terms started my free time has fizzled away. i was planning on rotoscoping myself doing liquid popping (rave-ish), the more fluid stuff looks a whole lot better than popping n locking. and i should have added a bit more oomph to the line when i did lock. anyways thanks, and ill try to finish the next one.!.!

Nice use of motion blur! This is a good example why 2D animation will never die out completely.

Dude - That is awesome,
I love it 1st one and the 2nd one looks right on.
I used to break dance in the 80's to 90's and I always wanted to do an animation of someone doing some awesome moves , and here we go you are doing it.

Looks damn good.

Are there any resources tutorials? on how this is done!?!?

I'm a complete noob in flash and for the love of life could not figure out how to animate with it!?!?

brkofdon
04-29-2004, 03:18 AM
chlywly - um this was really simple to do, bring in footage, create a new layer, and just trace right on top of the footage frame by frame! (thats a real general description of how i did it).

i dont have any resources i think there might be a bunch of tutorials in the flash section in cgtalk.

flash has sorta become a new friend to me, since its real easy to do animation studies really fast, and so im trying to get a good grasp of how bodies move especially in dance. sorta preparing myself for a short i wanna do. i have another clip im going to rotoscope, so just keep checkin back i guess.

good stuff man!
prefer the first myself but nice indeed :)

Was pleased to come across this thread as only a few days ago i tried some rotoscoping for the 1st time and the result wasn't too bad i thought for a first try. Was going to post here rather than create a new thread but i dont want to seem like a complete smeg :P

Hey one Q though. The lines on there are pretty sweetly done. im just curious if you use a graphics tablet at all? and if you do out of interest which one? Just that i picked up the Intuos 2 A5 USB the other day and loves it :)

Ahh i did actually do it before i saw this this thread but you have inspired me in regards to your style. totally forgot about using the pressure thing in flash and thats why mine hasn't got the cool smooth lines yours has got. Fair play though you did do a damn good job on that imo. just flows really nice.
you do anymore post them down asap :P

Cool stuff!! I wanna start into animation (im a complete noob - just a freshy in school) but was a little daunted by getting into 3d right away - maybe I'll try flash a bit! You've got a great style there! Love those flowing lines. finish that other stuff!! Wanna see more! :-)

thanx for the comments, im right in the middle of my term and i am pretty occupied by projects. so its hard to find a good amount of time to finish the one i started awhile ago. ...im really surprised someone still comments! i haven't updated in a long ass time. ill do several more frames now, and try to finish it later.

..i will post it when im done! for as long as this thread has been going i think i have to post it! hehe.

liquid isnt my favourite style but thats a damn cool animation there man.
i felt like trying one myself but i didnt feel it was worth starting a new thread for it so here it is
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/7530/poppinloop.gif
i wasnt feeling to do anything to complicated on my first try but du reckon im on the right tracks?

brkofdon
05-24-2004, 09:14 PM
hunch - pretty nice lil loop. you used flash right? its pretty smooth. the ones i rotoscoped were bad quality footage (webcam quality) so it was hard to make out a lot of the movement so i had to do some of it myself. good job ya your on the right track.

...hmm maybe we can start having people throw their own rotoscoped dance clips on here since you posted yours...possible?

cool

I like me more the last dance, 52304-rotopop.swf,
¿when you put music to the swf?, I am sure that when you make the swf you are with the walkman listening music.
Probe a dance of group, change the time, scale the instance, flip it...

This stuff is really cool - I haven't done any rotoscoping yet. I love how you've only sketched in the lines that you need to express the action or pose that's being taken at the time - I think it's the second one that was done that I like the most - simply because the legs only are drawn when the action was needed, yet you know they're there the whole time. Simple, stylistic. Man, these are great. :)

marc31 , aminator - thanx yo! ya flash is really a great program to animate with. and im trying to get really comfortable with it, for i might want to get a job doing flash animation...in time. you think i can put these rotoscopings in my demo reel? or are they to rough?

thnx again

marc31
05-29-2004, 05:21 PM
Yes, put your rotoscopings dance swfs in your demo reel, ¿why not?

aminator
05-31-2004, 12:26 AM
yes, putting rough stuff in your demo reel is great - food to show different styles. You will want to put finlized stuff in there, too, though - keep going the way you're going - Flash is GREAT for experimenting and learning on, and have fun!

Nice stuff! :-) I like the smooth sketchy style! Keep up the good work, and sure, add it to your reel!

-edit-

Anybody see "Waking Life"?? It just popped into my head. That was a peice of art! The rotoscoping was really well done and cool - each scene was rotoscoped with a different feel, to accomodate that scene. If you haven't seen it, see it! I think the DVD is like 8 bucks... lol
