View Full Version : Beast of Burden - Character - Crode
Crode 07-09-2002, 03:34 AM ok this challenge sounds cool and I can fit it into my demo reel, and some of my other work for my classes. I probably wont be going "extreme" high detail model since i have to animate it with other characters... a set... cloth... paint effect... my pc would probably blow up.
These pics are from the work from the weekend. Sketch from Fri last week. Done in XSI. Please gimme feedback! I wont be offended if its negative. thx

Very cool armor plating you made there. That looks pretty dam fine.

Yep there are some definite problems with parts of the head in my sketch and ive changed a few things. Like that bone point on the front of its face
Work on the head has been going slowly... i should have done more sketches... heres what i have so far. Still need to do work on the jaw area and some nostrils. Tell me what you think

I really like the horn re-design on the nose. It fits much better with the rest of the "horns" in the plating. The head looks really good. I especially like the corner webbing you got in its mouth. I can never get that right when I try it :p Great work so far.

Thanks for all your comments guys (gals)!! I see after just 1 day my threads been buried under 4 pages worth so i thought i would throw up another render so that people actually see my work until it gest buried again ;)
This is about as much detail as ill be doing with the head and move onto the rest of his underbody. Maybe ill work up some displacement maps and some bumps also.... later

yeah its getting there.
I like the overall design, but right now you gotta fix his bottom lip. ITS KILLING ME! It would probably kill him too if he bit down.
Whats his burden? Just outa curiosity?
His nose is kinda a cool idea, looks like a gardening tool!
OOO i know his burden is he has to plow fields all day with his face. That would suck eh =)
Yeah man keep updating and dont give.

Hey buddy!!:buttrock: Thanks for the encouragement. I feel so good i think i should throw up another render of the leg. Still needs a little tweaking.
As always please leave me some feedback. First 5 replies get 10 bucks! (in canadian) ;)

Nice leg! The rest is coming together well too..kind of got a 'godzilla monster' vibe at first, but he's really shaping up interestingly. Lots of places to harness this beastie. Look forward to seeing it all as one :)

sorry that i can't come up with some "change this and change that" sentences :D but i really like your model overall. i think in the end that's a good fact, isn't it?;) i btw. i especially like the feet!
Crode
07-14-2002, 01:10 AM
Thx guys, i spent a lot of time on changing the legs since i didnt have a proper sketch of the way i wanted them. Im still considering another claw out the backside of the heel or i might just leave it the way it is.
Heres the rotoscope of a triceretops ive been using for the leg proportions

hey great start crode, and nice definition on the legs.. another good point: references... it`s one of the most important thing to dig out if you want to have a good looking model.. keep it up!

Thanks :D Good crits. I'll be adding a bit more detail when i think i'm done with the overall look of Bart.
What i mean about the toes not being there when i'm done is that i'll model some sort of metal "shoes" for him... hard to explain right now, but i'll make one model with "shoes" and one without and probably let you guys decide what's most cool.
I've been trying to make his muscles protrude, but my mesh is all fugged up, and i'm not good at modeling musculature. but i'll give it another go later today [as well as the nostril part].
Love the way your BoB's going. No crits from me today though, time for me to hit the sack, and i'm a bit to tired to come with anything creative as feedback.
G'night.

As always thanks for your comments, it really keeps me modivated to work on this stuff.
After pulling another all-nighter this is what its looking like so far. Im still not happy with the front shoulder area. And the stomach/ rib cage needs some fixing. The feet are not at their proper position because i rotated the legs around before i attached them to the body. When i get some rigging in there they will look proper
I LOVE the "M" key tool in XSI. I believe its called the manipulator tool but it allows me to freehand sculpt those verticies like mad! Ill probably wear out that key before this challenge is done
excuse the screwed up lighting. i didnt feel like fixing it up

Good job on the skeletal and muscle definition for the legs, keep using that level of detail on the rest of the model as you go and youll have a strong piece for the competition!:lightbulb

I thought I would comment on your model since you gave good insight on mine....I like the concept and the prongs for the overall body. I'm anxious to see it all attached together too. I'll keep an eye on this one!:wavey:

Hey well heres a little update. Ive been moving parts of the models into Maya and working on the back plates structure.
Still trying to think of what the saddle and harness will be like... I was thinking maybe a 2 or 3 person saddle for some amazon ladied carrying sharp spears ;)
SO while thinking I got a little side-tracked and made up a procedural shader for his skin. Tell me what you think.

07-21-2002, 07:13 PM
Wow I've been away from this thread for too long. Let me get caught up a bit:
The leg looks really nice. I love the structure and forms you have in it.
The detailed body with the shell on it is looking pretty solid, nice stuff.
As far as the procedural shader, I like everything except the really high contrast between the bumps and the base. I think making it more subtle would look much nicer. Try one where they are almost the same then tweak up the contrast little by little.
Just my 2 cents great stuff so far.

I'ts a nice bump. My feeling is that if you tile it more and make it smaller it'll make the beats seem bigger.
Rudity
07-22-2002, 02:15 AM
Hey man that looks like leather.......... or is it??heheh
tile it more so the beast looks bigger
I like your legs, they are sweet.
If your still having difficulty figuring out what his burden is going to be then have him plow fields or build walls with his face..
have like 3 hot amazons whipping his ass to build stuff.. and put whip scars all over him... =)
Man its starting to look really good crode..
see yeah tomorrow

ok heres some more stuff. messing around with cloth.
I need some help! Im having a hard time thinking about what else to add for detail. Maybe some clay pots and feathers on strings... what you all think?

07-23-2002, 08:42 AM
The overall appearance is great!
Looking at the forelegs it seems like he is walking on the tips of his toes. What about making them more massive?!
More detail? Mmhhh...
I propose to add some little nasty spikes to his back.
Crode
07-23-2002, 08:51 AM
yep his front feet are a problem and his toes are into the ground. I had to rotate the leg before attaching them to the body. i can fix it after rigging. thx for your comments, ive been thinking of more spikes

The cloth looks to be floating
Artifex
07-23-2002, 10:35 PM
Umm, for the detail adding. I propose that you get more into the face to be able to show some caracter. Add volume to the lips and bump mabey, a beak like or scale like mouth should be cool. Mabe some eyelids?
Teeths? Hole for ears?
Crode
07-24-2002, 01:14 AM
thx for your comments
yes the cloth is floating, its collision offset was too high which has been fixed. the cloth is less transparent now. but it still looks like a piece of tissue paper.. thats going to take some tweaking
I doubt ill be going into any more detail on the head. (maybe a displacement map) Ive already gone way overboard with the poly count. This creature has to be used for things other than this challenge and i cant afford to go overboard.
Anyway if you look at jurassic park you will notice that they dont have a lot of expression in their face except for a jaw and blinking sometimes a nostril flair. I was thinking about ears a long time ago but do dinos have ears? It could be one of the reasons they all died out :buttrock: :buttrock:
Artifex
07-24-2002, 03:51 AM
Well they have holes for ears. I love lizards and reptiles, here's an example that could help you with detail.

ive been doing some small refinement, working on the head a bit more, ill post more later. Still no ears :) I just dont know where to place them that would make them look good

07-26-2002, 10:01 PM
man you've come a long way since i last checked this thread out.
Good to see your back into maya.. =)
For the ear holes just put a little hole behind the eyes somewhere.
Hmmm but man i like it. it looks good. I think his bottom lip should be fixed still. bit too pointy i think. how can he eat?
And since i am a man of character i can say that the creatures facial expression doesn't look like he's straining too much, or tortured too much my hot amazons..heheh for detail thats a must.. A hot amazon!!
Man i really like the legs though, they are cool. hurry up and update.
if you get more expression into his face this thing would kick super major more ass than it already kicks. (did that make any sense?????)

As requested ive done more work on the head ;)
I made his face frown more and his eye sockets more eevil looking.
Added more geometry for blinking.
Also added listening hole which is almost hidden by the harness but hey its there ;)

Still working on misc stuff. I might be bending or breaking the rules but im using transparency maps on the feathers and the banner. I refuse to model massive poly feathers when a plane and transparency map does the job just fine.
That trim on the cloth is pretty cool. I got it to follow the edge of the cloth as it gets draped :buttrock:

Hey crode, really awesome updates! The new details on the head look great. One suggestion with the ear would be to make one edge (leading or trailing) sharper. Kind of like one edge has a soft edge rolling in and the other has a hard edge rolling out. That might help to put the finnishing touches on the ear.
All of the details on the contraption look awesome. As far as the transparency maps go. Techinically they wouldn't be judged since those are considering texturing effects...but I totally agree with you as far as using a simple map instead of lots of geometry. Honestly they add a nice detail touch on the picture as a whole, but I can't see them being a major problem in judging since they aren't really parts of the beast or burden.

WOW!
The bump is awesome! I love those details. Very nice model indeed Crode!
Crode
08-04-2002, 04:18 PM
The bumpmap was really easy to do. All of it is 3d procedural textures except for the one painted on the face. Ill be converting them over to 2d maps and using them for a base for the colour and other maps, it should look quite good.
Ill have to leave this character for a while and start on another character. maybe i can fit it into the next challenge somehow
