Very Interesting concept !
19's style less used by challengers
and you have successfull used.
Very nice treatments of the picture
and clean colors sketches.

You and I have a very similar ideas in terms of the setting at least... not too many people have gone for the steampunk style, basing their character in the past.
My idea is more of a clockwork style rather than steam powered.
You're able to portray the style I'm after a lot better though ;)
You can see my WIP via link below...
Will be keeping an eye on this one, looking forward to see what you come up with.

Wow! thanks guys! There are so many posts in this forum that its hard to keep track of everything - and there is so much great stuff being done.
here is the concept a bit more worked out. C+C is welcomed (and wanted :)) I want to push the concept sketch as far as I can so I dont have to figure it out when I am modeling. that will be a first for me :)

yes.... if the final 3d is going to be like the scketch... or better... I pretty sure that this is goping to be one of my favorites (already is). what I like the most is that this is one of the few diferent ideas in this challenge.

Really really really interesting, like a lot the retro-style, biological industrial between XVIII and XIX century...
I think you can work more on the Cane (stick he s handling with his right hand) 'cause it looks too medieval-fantastic.

I started to paint the concept to get a better feel for where I want to go with the textures... about an hour and a half into it, I realized I might as well just start modeling! I wasnt going to benefit by investing any more time on the concept sketch. so here is as far as I got and probably the final sketch.
however, Grorum had a good idea about his cane. I think I will sketch up something different for that. Thanks Grorum! And thanks everyone gor the kind words about the sketch!! There is so much inspiration to be found here.

so jealous. what a great drawing. i love how clean your style is.
the machine is very nice. i can hear how it would sound puttering along the cobblestones.
i especially like contrast between the bulk of the engine and brain housings and the skinny, spindley wheels.
have you considered driving the wheels like train wheels? http://www.flying-pig.co.uk/mechanisms/pages/piston.html
but maybe changing the wheels would bulk them up and kill the contrast thing I like so much. hmm.
the way the cane is positioned, it could also appear to be a lever or gear shift.
thanks for the inspiration. i want to make something cool after seeing your work.

Nice one!
BaronVonWink: wishing I had your drawing skills to be able to convey my ideas like you are able. You should consider entering the 2D comp as well with those skills.
Very nice concept and one of the more original ideas that I've seen in this challenge. I really love the modern-historical style. The character just drips with charisma.

Excellent! Nice to see someone else with an oldfashion design. I think most people are going for the futuristic look in the contest. First off- thanks guys, you all are very kind and supportive!
Virtuoso- Steam Punk rules! Have you checked out the movie "city of lost children?" there is alot of neat stuff in there.
Powell - I like your concept too! ... and I do see the similarities in your first sketch. The guy attached to a wheeled thing right? Very cool! I swear I didnt see it before I did mine. :surprised:
smoochbelly - I love the idea of the cane being the way to control the transport-thing!!! thanks! I also like the idea of a train-like wheel rig. hmmmm.... I think I will try that too
Cartesius - Sadly I am not as accomplished at modeling as I am at drawing. I have been drawing my entire life but only been 3D-ing for a year  but I will be pushing myself with this one!
How do you all keep up with these posts?!? there are so many off them I cant keep track. and so much good stuff being done!
I started to work on the modeling and I will post something in a few hours (i hope!)

Off to a flying start, and you have translated your sketch into 3D perfectly.
My only comment would be that the axel doesn't look like it would support the weight of both the maching and the man.
But then again, the look of the wheels and axles in your sketch give it a sort of rickety feeling, which suits the style very well...
Looking forward to seeing more..
PS, are the green things in teh tubes brains?

BaronVonWink:
Great concept and originality! I love the 'victoriana' here....I think it would be nice to see the smoking prof/main man blocked in (eye-bags allowing, of course!)
The valved brains really make it for me (in the details) and don't know if showing some 'hot-air' rising' (steam) is counted as modelling - should be :) it would help put some dynamic atmosphere into the image in many ways....
Love it!, great stuff!
tolin
04-05-2004, 04:08 PM
man you have the best, most original idea in this whole challenge.
I was just thinking though that when i heard that the smaller axel looked to small I agreed, but now that i see the larger one, I think the smaller one is better. Before the transport "glided" now it just rolls. The smaller axel gives it an avian feel, light yet strong, maybe just shorten the lenght of the axel.

i love this concept. the use of the old stylistic elements from the 1800's is great. my only concern with this is piece is the level of intergration the guy has with his vehicle... or his machineflesh-iness if u will. i think he could use a bit more mechanical enhancing. but on the whole ur off to a great start. fantastic modelling.
BaronVonWink
04-07-2004, 10:12 PM
Abigor- I think you have a good point:hmm: in retrospect he isnt showing enough machineflesh-iness. I think I have to rethink the concept a bit:blush: adding some more to the mechanics-to-skin ratio..
perhaps his lower body could blend into the main machine more?
Abigor
04-07-2004, 11:17 PM
perhaps. id hafta put some thought into it myself. the 1st ridiculous thing that jumps to mind is somehow have the machine wearing pants... like the pants start on his waist and somehow finish on the machine... u no wat im sayin? just a stupid thought :)

Here is an update on the concept - it is an attempt at emphasizing the integration of machine with the flesh. I wanted to stay away from making it look horrific, but sadly, any attempt at showing the flesh-machine transition looks pretty gruesome to me. Also I am contemplating removing his lower body and replacing it with more machinery. Any thoughts on these issues would be most appreciated!

04-17-2004, 05:21 AM
Nice detailed stuffs man, I think in order to make it not so scary, the joints between flesh and machine must be kept cleaner, and have cleaner cuts? The right hand is looking great man Would not be too scary i hope hehe
mosconariz
04-17-2004, 06:34 AM
Yeah, I'm with Ravendsg... Well, it's difficult to achieve the level of elegance that you put in the first two sketches and the "car"... But it's important that you show the places in which flesh and machine meets without loosing style... It should be a clean design en every aspect (IMHLO). Curves, spirals, and a little of continuity in line's paths. You're creating one of the best jobs in here, so

BaronVonWink
04-19-2004, 04:38 AM
Thanx for the input guys! You nailed it on the head - I must keep the transition from flesh to machine clean and designy :D otherwse it begins to look disturbing- which doesn't fit this guys character. I hadn't thought of that at all!

Hi BaronVonWink.... just drop in to say hi man... you're entrys coming along really well... and the start of the head is sweet man.

Pleribus
04-19-2004, 04:50 AM
yes, more metal over skin as opposed to skin stretched over metal, if that makes any sense. easier to create clean lines with the metal on top, but you also run the risk of it looking like armor instead of integration of flesh and machine. I'm sure you'll come up with a solution.
The head by the way is top notch. You have really managed to stick to your sketch with incredible accuracy. Keep it up. Really looking forward to seeing more.

A warning to obsessive compulsive people like myself:
Do not buy the "City of Heros" online game!!
Since purchasing this game i have not opened Maya, got more than 5 hours sleep a night, been productive at work.... etc. etc. :(
I am not a big Gamer to say the least, but i have become obsessed with this game - I havent even been to these message boards since!
ug
well, the work being done here is certainly top notch and I applaude the commitment shown. Something I have lacked in the last couple of months.
cya around... I hope.

Kurt- i just sent you an email... and it only took a month for me to respond. lol Your entry is awesome, great job!
Squibbit- yep, i am not kidding, i am very embarrased by the lack of proffesionalism i have shown. i need to redeam my self! maybe in the next comp? I have entered many of these challenges on another site and completed all but one, which was for a good reason - not like this one. I just checked out your 2d entery and your 2d work is stunning!

very good stuff man. i love your concept.
the only crit i got is the shirt of this guy. the wrinkles in the chest area just dont look ok. straight lines, going symmetrical. it's the only "no no" ive found ;)
keep us up to date

 Yours was the greatest concept! Burn out that videogame! Just can't believe it...
That's why I quit from playing videogames since Mario Bros. III  Or it was Packman? :D

My dear baron, you just have to finish this one. It was one of the most original and best approaches in the whole contest, and I'm absolutely positivie that if you had continued with it, it would have placed itself very, very near the top!
