Here's the concept for the General / Human Interface....Once again a Digi Pic of the page out of my sketchbook. Anyone have a scanner I can use ???!!!. So now onto modeling...the model will be much more of a "functional" piece, my concepts tend to be a little , um expressive..

The front of the toe section of the front leg...not sure if I'm all to happy though with the way the claw on the front lays, might shorten the whole section to give it a more compact look,, but we'll see>>>>

A wireframe snap of the latest on this section of the model....if I change anything here,,,it will be the shocks on the top of the back section, I don't think they blend with the lines of this model. I'm trying to go for a very mismatched look, but It needs to look like someone actually made it,,I'm just not sore if they would incorpirate shocks like that..???

Thanks for the comments out there, I do appreciate the good words. It's been hard to make much progress this week, we had 2 birhtdays in the family, plus a sale on Patron at the local juice markeT~ bad (or good) combination!!!~ just pulled out his section this evening and put a quick render togethR. Still unsure where I'm going to attatch this piece, but probably the top section of the leg, somewhere where it meets the body. I still want to add another small section beforre it meets the main body, I'm seeing 4 sections in the front legs in my head, plus the toe sectS. .....We'Re Growing though...

I'vev re -thought my whole approach to this modeling, or maybe I've just found the right direction for this piece??!!?? I'm going to go away from the typical "Mech armor over random S**T" aproach. I want this thing to feel like if you put power to it, It would fire up and work like you would expect, So I've been studying Industrial Equiptment & excavators latley and I think that's the was I'm going to go. I've Re modeled the mechanics of the foot to get an idea,. There's going to be lots more parts and lots of hydraulics and such. Let me know what you all think. I really wan this creature to embody the true rage of it's opperator, like the pure rage of "The Hulk". I think this general was very ruthless, winning battles by killing entire families, entire cities. I see this world as a place were none of the tribes could be called "good guys", a place that could only be controled with fear, kinda like evil vs evil. You don't really want anyone to win!!!. Anyways that's just an expansion on the concept a bit, I hope to have the leg finished by the end of the day.

Lots of crazy detail. I like it alot. But knowing LW this is going to be one very heavy mesh once you've finished.
I have done some industrial modeling and the hardest part is making it feel right. Think you've captured it here v.well.
All the best

Well I did what I said, haha, Kind of,!! Here's the next advance in this, the main front leg...I'm happy so far with the mechanics, but I think I want to add another section to lenghten the whole leg, i want the proportions to be insect like in a way, but it still needs to look like a machine right??..Out for a night of martini sippin,,have more for ya all minyana..

Growing wire's in this leg. I Drew some wild curves in the side veiw first, and then pushed them around so they fit between all the parts. It's going to be a very "sloppy" look with the wire's, I want the final image to look like he's MechZ just come out of a hard long battle.
your nut's! with a slight hint of madness.
love the wires and the modelling,I like the idea of the wires being messy as if they have grown that way or something.
Looks great though.

Thanks for the question, actually no, no background in machinery, I've actually been told that alot about this model. I really wanted the feel to be that this could actually be built one day, maybe you'd find it in the garage of that guy down the street that no one ever see's!! I just tryed to pay close attention to the functionality of it,,,,this moves this and if that moves it shifts that and so on. It's been intensive, alot to keep track of. Hey maybe I'll go for my engineering degree after finishing her up !!

I've added these Barrel clips, I think they will due the proper amount of damage.!!!!! Harnebele, thanks for your comments, yes Lightwave is very, well, under-used I think in the pro. community. It's very versitile, and produces amazing results in one stand alone package, no need for all manner of externel plugin' or renderers. The only things I think it may have lacked are going to be made up for in full with version 8...hard and soft dynamics, and a killer IK rigging system....My modeling is a combination of both Nurbs, traditional and also Splines...it's just nearly impossible to sub-patch out a very detailed mechanic without making it look like jelly..a good smooth bevel works just grat and in a fraction of the time...As for my subission's..there have been no surfacing smoothing run on any of my surfaces yet, I wait untill texturing to do that. This is why some of the hydrolics still look a little ,,, um ,,,polyganial,,,is that a word???..any ways, all will be rectified while texturing...Laterz ...Bang BanG!!!

Wauw this is some crazy detailed modelling. Theres just one thing that catches my eye a bit: The pneumatics looks extremely thin and fragily. Im sure this is done too make room for more crazy detail, but it just doesnt look like it can move all that weight around. I hope this is not too far into the process to fix?
Anyway its just IMO and i might be wrong =)

Progress so far on this Arm. I Plan on having the two arm have seperate purposes and functions. The one you see here will be the Assult arm,, damage causing S**t disturbing blasterZ!!! And the other will be more for interaction with the enviroment around. I don't see it with a apposable (human/tech style) hanD,,more like a Crab pinchers with insanly powerfull hydrolics to close it. If you think about how powerful a crabs claws are in relation to it's size..I think that look will have the best illusion of pure power...this is the DEVISTATOR after all!!!!..
Still waiting on my update to the concept Idea for this beast and the world he lives...
Will be rendering out this arm within the next few hours to post for a better look for y'all.
Nice update man , a lot of details there , i will wait for the render

Back again with a few more hour long renders!!! actually they aren't that bad for time,,about 15 mins per frame ,5 pass antialaising, with Radiosity inside a "lightbox". A Reandered shot of the main joimt that will control the shoulder rotation. If you look close at the mechanics, they were modeled to give alot of rotation for front and back fireing, over 180*!!! the heavy looking piece you see will actually be incorpirated into the main body and will move in and out ( as the hydro's show) for even more menuverability (I know i don't even pretend to be a speller !!!}}} Oh well Late, must sleep.......

A question I am always asking myself when I see such detailed mechanical work is where do you draw your inspiration from ??? Like putting hydraulics here and armour there.... And the most amazing thing is that your machine looks like it could actually work. I dont know if this has already been asked before, in case it has been, I excuse myself. But I would be very happy if could shortly explain your workflow in getting ideas for machinery and modeling these fantastic details that work.

Well team...I'm off....really though,,,heading on vacation for the next 6...Cabo...heheheh.....Sooooo I will have to leave you with a re post of my Plazma Throwaz....(high density super heated energy rounds).....The story behind these....the last major advancement of the us military before it fell in on itself in the GreaT civial war...launching rounds of high intensity energy....more mass per voume than any known substance...they are seriously ass kickerZ...but because of the infancy of this technology..they still remain a very large and heavy weapon.....not suitable for troop arsenel.....so why not slap two of these beasts on here and see what we can do......this is a render from last week...one unfortunatly lost in the recent attack...I have gotten further on the General Human interface...aoth set of rifles...Hydro's for more movement...parts to interface into the flesh..ect ect..but no time for a render not...have to pack..talk to you all Lat~ER~Z

Um, the ankles wouldn't be able to handle the weight when it's standing, let alone when it walks. In one image you can see that the leg connects to the foot by a tiny cone thingy.
It's amazing work, but the ankles and one of the arms look like they'd just break off.

Almost There....ah breath in that texturing air.....whatever....this is the main clamp grapple attatchment that will cradle the torso section of the great general ...looks painful I know..but he's a bit sick in the head...the extensions comming out of the inside of the clamp will feed into his spine to supply all necessary fluids to sustain his re animation....I'm nearly finished the front section of this system for "driving" this beast...a big mess of hydroZ and supply lines all working in harmony.....

I've basicaly finished work on the General himself...In looking at these images I can still see a few tweeks,,,but I really like this look for the over all feel...added a few more pivot attatchments in the hydrolics that attatch to his arms to give a fuller range of motion....he could now compleat all motions of an actual human shoulder joing (all shoulder motions are some combination of up/down & forward/back)....anyways with these new pieces I added he will now be able to move like that all in hydrolics and pivots....kinda cool cause I really wanted this this from the begining to feel like it would actualy work......I will post a series of images showing the progression of attatchments here.....

Hi thanks for you comment on the leg. It strange course, just after I posted it, I notice your tread.. and was amazed by the level of details you put into the machinparts, and the very nice way you made it all fit together. Dreaming that one day I would get those skills. Then you, of all made a comment on my leg, that meant alot, and today I am in for another 10 hours of work, with new energy. If you fell like it, dont hesitate to make hard critic on my work, since this is my first high poly charater modeling, I have a lot to learn. I wish I could give you any usefull critic your your work, but you to damn skilled. Maybe there is one thing... your scetch with the guy pointing out in the air is very good, make sure you get the same kind of attitude on the final moddeling. I dont think of the compesition, but the way your guy act in the drawing is very neat... it has personality.
keep up the good work :applause:

Lovely detailing on the machine sections. I am loving the pipes and wires too, they add a nice level of complexity.
With the torso, I think you need to smooth out the chest and abdomen section some more. Some stretching of the skin around where the clamps are could look good too??
Also consider giving him more refined cheek bones and slightly bigger skull to define the head more, its kind of getting lost underneath the implants and stuff.
Overall, its looking very promising and is generally very interesting to look at with a lot of nice details in the right places.

PlaZma BlastAZ...and ...well....a bunch of other SH*t....antwats...this is the generals RESTING POSITION...he be similar to my original concept in the final compO.......I've added much more definition and detail to his torso ..chest and head and he has alot more life now....I wish I had the time to add more details...heheh...but that clocks still tickin....Ess(N)CE
I'm truely amazed over the level of detail on the machine parts, as many has said before me. I just have one question; is the general going to have any shields, e.g. for protectional purposes, as he is kind of unprotected up there. Other than that it look really cool.

the skin looks good (like the rest of the model. great job!), but I think it might be nice to add some signs of, let's say, 'outdoor activity'. no blood, but I would show that he's been on the battlefield, in the rain, in the cold and so on. stains, blisters, burns, all that.

The GrunT .... other tank that will share the background in the final scene,,,,,both modeled yesterday...about 3 1/2 hrs on each gave them enough detail to fit well with the Devistator Walker and the General....but would have loved to be able to spend more time on them...will fix a couple of small things but I think for now they will have to do as is because of time constraints....

One of the most devistating new creations out of the New united Defence...Fast and small for striking and equiped with crude but effective rake blades for plowing into the enemys front lines.. only the most eleite and skilled may piolet these units...and they know that the missions and demands placed on these machines usually means their own deaths....they have a special thirst for victory that borders on blood lust........

An older model unit...still more efficiant that many new battle field vehicles...It's large presence looms over the enemy, so hevily armored they are known for the huge amount of damage they can take....a unit specialy choosen by the general and upgraded with heavy guns and the new prototype HI Int. PlazmA Rifles.......

Thanks guys...Cygnus...I love the new enviroment for your scene...very creepy in a fun way...Virtuoso...beautiful texturing and such style...ok...now I have finished the textures for the ~Devistator and the General~...just also wraped up build and texture on both ~Support Walkers~.....based on the Devistator...they opperate on an ever evolving warfare based program developed by the general before his death ...they are linked to him via the ceribral interface attatched to the base of his skull and react to changes on the battle field by accessing certain aspects of their programs...I will reander out a snap of each right now........  ....keep going strong everyonE

Well just testing out some new lighting rigs right now....a little pissed cause my original thought was to go HDRI...but after testing that our last night,,,the time factor is just going to make that impossible with so many faces in thie scene....so building a light dome right now with some envelopes for intensity , ect....

This is the Pit BULL Class walker support for the General....opperates off a battle program constantly updated by the thought interface of the general...basical it (and the other walker support_The GroundPoundeR_) react on a small delay to the movements and reactions of the general's Devistator walker...making them a further outside extension of the general....the three work as one .....A test on the lighting rig also....remember trying to simulate an overcast day...so no heavy direct source......55 spots shadow mapped with 30" cone angle....render time 22 minutes 5 pass...render with radiosity on thie same...2 1/2 hours....eek....

This is the second of the support upgrades to the Generals Devistator walker..again connected cereberaly and responsive through a ever evolving collection of warfare programs....they respond with what amounts to a ~Mechanical emotioN.......the main attack of the Ground pounder is to stand directly abouve a grouping of enemy troops and blast them down hard with the 4 multi clipper 50mm cannons ..2 mounted on each side positioned for ground firing.....

Just a snap shot of the scene lay out (wire) for the background pass...all the vehicles you've seen will be in this pass...including some attack planes I made to fill the sky.....colors in the background will be very plain...washed out almost to bring into feature all the vehicles...I've made test after test over the past few days and beacuse of the size of this scene any changes are causing a monuental delay time....so I'm just going to have to go with this pass .....smoke and fog will have to be added in photoshop as well as some dust.......back soon with this rendered out...had to double my memeory just to open this scene...

Layer one finished rendering....3000 by 2000 ...desided to go for widescreen to optimize the crazy imposing look of this beast....green screen always gives me the fastest results for masking in compositing....background layer rendering right now....I'm actually not sure if I am going to include all the other vehicles in the final..this is such a scene dominating character...I'm not sure if maybe the other vehicles might not take away from him....we'll see in compositing in the morining...cutting it close I know but it's all going to come together tomorrow....just in time hehehe.....sleep tight teaM....

So many things I wanted to add...there was literaly 29 sec's left at that final submission...I think I almost had a heart attack at the end....actualy I did..but it was minor........on Sh+T man so much happened today 2 computer crashes in mid render...(2 & 1 Hrs in respectivly)....every element in this scene takes a life time to load...another lifetime to adjust....oh man....I think I am going to tally up my total faces here.....over 2 1/2 million I'm sure....didn't get to compo over my background but no matter...I think this shows the elements of this machine better....and this is a character study after all .....need to rest for a sec then will be back to tell the story of how this came to be.....for now...time for a drinK.....

I am going to post a few images of the works in progress on this creation...It was hard to show all aspects of this is a single final render...I think that's why I prefer animations ...but I wanted anyone veiwing to be able to see a few of the parts...i say a few cause there are so many...it's daunting....but they are all "functional" in a sense that maybe...perhaps...one day a version of a WaR Walker could be built...My current day job brings me in such a close working enviroment with Machines such as Excevators, Dozers and Lifts...We have gone so far already in the creation of these real world "Human upgrades"...i beleive thay are the real Machine flesh of today..our interactions extend our abilities through these machines...that is why I wanted to stay true to these design elements in my Devistator....they are the closest thing we will all see in this life time to true Machine Flesh...and with the advancememtns in nervous system interaction lately I see a world in the next few decades where machines like these really could be run by some for of "human nervous system interface"/.....to really react to our movemnts....with the way Defense bugets are going I woulden't be suprised if the military adopts this technology first off......well I've wanted to expend on this concept and the inspiration for this beast for some time and I guess that is it....for now....with the advancement in stem cell research and genetics ~Re-Animation~ may also not be so far into the future....I guess we will just wait and see....that's what made this contest so great..the future of these "devises" will come from minds like ours...the greatest inventions of the past have come from the most artistic minds.....and I think we all have glimpsed into the future with our entries......Enjoy your weekend....enjoy thiS futuRE~

I think i've said it before, but needs repeating; how do you create
all this details? It's amazing, I have trouble detailing the smallest thing and you create these huge complex machines with astounding LOD.
Tutorial or tips and trix, please!

green screen always gives me the fastest results for masking in compositing
Great job - Just need to stress what someone said before, dont add a green background colour, your 3D app can generate a perfectly good alpha, or "mask" for you automatically. Your edges will be tinted and detail will be lost, jagged edges etc.
Anyway, good luck in the contest!
