I've successfully hooked the computer up to the tv and VCR hookup via s video. When the VCR is on, Line 2 picks up the s Video connection from the computer nice and clear. However, there is one problem. It's in Black and White.

My VCR is an older toshiba model from the mid 90's with no special slots other than your standard analog connection ports. Does this have anything to do with the black and white color? Is my VCR so obsolete that it can't process S Video colors?

If this is the case, what features would I have to look for in a new VCR that could handle S Video?

I'd hate to throw out a perfectly good working VCR, so if you know any other ways to get the s video working right, feel free to post.

Well, if your VCR has a S-Video input, it should work properly. So lets assume that's the case.
Could it be that the TVstandard of your computers video-out is set to the wrong one? Older TV's and VCRs show other TVstandards scrabled or in Black and White.
Also, it could be possible that your S-video cable is defect.

My VCR doesn't have an s video input. Basicly, what I did was connect my computer to the tv itself via s video. It then became an extension of my monitor, accessed through the video 2 setting. I then connected my VCR to the TV, The VCR setup was Input to Video 2(Shared with the S Video Output from the computer), Output to Video 1(So I can see what's on the VCR). After setting the VCR to Line 2 via the Video 1 Slot on the TV, it seemed to work fine, however the picture was black and white. When I set the TV to Video 2(the direct monitor/tv connection) I got a perfect picture.

I suppose the t.v. standard on my video card could be a possiblity by not being set correctly. If that's the case, how do I set it? As for the cable itself, it seems to be working fine since I get good color when I am in Video 2 mode(direct from computer to t.v.)

Generally the output type setting is found in the display properties. However you may be running into another thing entierly, which is Macrovision. The GeForce2GO on my laptop would switch that on whenever a video overlay was active and that would cause the VCR display to go all funny with the color, generally it would get black and white but it would also fade in and out. The output looked fine on the television. Originally this was designed to prevent taping of DVDs, but it really pissed me off because I was trying to output my own video stuff to tape and couldn't. Luckily it went away when I upgraded to a GeForce4GO.

What graphics card are you using?

I am currently using a GeForce 4 Ti 4600. So you're basicly saying that this black and white coloring could be a form of copy protection?

nah macrovisions protection brings levels of brightness up and down. More likely one of the pins on your svideo cable or in the tv is bent. 'side from that do the standard update your drivers thing it might be your dac. Also try swittching the TV to be your primary model.
