View Full Version : Wireframe Shot
H2600 07-08-2002, 09:46 PM I'm working on the challenge and someone wants me to post a wireframe shot. How should I go about rendering one in 3ds max? I know I can check "Wire" in the material enditor, but then you can see all the wires and everything, how do I only show the wire that _should_ be visible? Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

There's a "grab viewport" script somewhere in the \scripts directory if you installed the bonus scripts. Otherwise, you can look on www.scriptspot.com and find it there. It lets you take a screenshot of the active viewport and save it out as an image file.

...or just press the 'print screen' button on your keyboard, ( or ALT 'print screen' if you want to get just the contents of an active viewport ), open photoshop, make a new image ( file / new ) and then paste into it ( CTRL V ) ( the new image will be the size of your grabbed image when you create it ). :p

Search for the file TILESQR.TIF in the ../3dsmax4/maps/misc and put it in the diffuse slot or use it as a mask for a mix map in the diffuse slot so that you can set a color for the wire and another for the face. And don't forget to put face map. I'm attaching an image using this map as a mask for a Mix map.
Cheers!

or:
make a copy of your mesh in the same position (shift+click)
then place the PUSH modifier over it & increase the param a
little bit, then apply a wire shader to it
you can assign a solid color material to the original mesh to
view the wire & original in better way.

Tried this some time ago, some times the wire disappears
in the mesh :(
I just clean up my viewport, set up some color, turn on
show surface and edge (lol don't know how it's called in
english :D) and take a screenshot using alt+print.
descent results but it's ok :)
Perhaps discreet will steal this wire-render option from
NewTek's Lightwave ;) :bounce:

Use the Lattice modifier. Adjust it so you have no balls at each vertice, and render.
