Hi

I don't have too much experience dealing with light setups, but I have to make a scene with a glass object and no bitmap reflection maps...

to acquive something like this:

http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/lw-gallery/displayimage.php?album=8&pos=24

another example:

I can't use global illumination nether HDRI maps... because it's needs to be rendered really fast... it's an animation.

I just want to make a good and clean light / reflection setup for realistic glass...

I use lighwave 7.5c

thanks in advance!

If you only use the HDRI for the reflections, not to illuminate, you won't add more time to your render.
You can blur your HDRI and to use some gradient in the reflection channel with an input parameter in incidence angle or some fresnel effect.

Best Regards

Gerardo
