What about any resources that list the general basics of each mental ray node? Does this holy grail exist, or are we stuck with the great trial-and-error that has dominated mental ray for so long?

These two tutorials were extremely helpful to me:

Do this one first (http://www.3dluvr.com/intercepto/maya/tutorials/mray_thegathering/introduction.htm)

Then this one second (http://www.willsmith.org/maya_gi_tutorial_1/Wills_Maya_GI_Tweaking_Guide_1.html)

There is this one:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1894893433/qid=1080376424/sr=8-2/ref=pd_ka_2/102-4775297-0977717?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

There is also this dvd for maya and mr, but according to the reviews on amazon, it is a piece of shit.

Yeah, the Mesmer Real Mental Ray DVD has the worse comments I've ever seen on Amazon, yelling and personal criticism, lots of angry people out there.

There's the Alias DVD on Mental Ray, but like most know.. most of the Alias DVDs are pretty bleh.. and one being made (or remade) at http://www.motiondesign.biz - long delays though.. so I cannot recommend till I eventually receive it, and will most likely write a review for.

Anyone know if the XSI EXP docs contain some good information? I don't wanna goto softimage.com if I don't have to (it's icky and smells weird).

NUKE-CG, I'd say that when MR for Maya came I had to reinstall my old XSI 1.5 free Demo just for reading the Docs. And it helps me a lot cuz there is a couple of information not existing in the MR for Maya Docs.

I have the Alias mental ray DVD's. Paolo's "Using Mental Ray for Maya" is pretty basic (but still good for beginners). But His "Mental Ray Custom Shaders" DVD is awesome.

I am also interested in the motiondesign.biz DVD also but only if it has lots of the new Maya 6 techniques and information included in it. There is quiet a few changes since 5.

Thanks alot! These are great resources. That's to bad about the DVD being postponed due to Alias policy though.

I use both books as my bibles and would chop the hand off of any that dare try to take them from me.

From my cold dead hands...

So you like them then? Hehe.

Everytime I think about buying them I think:

* Is there a 'better' one or should I get both?

* What if they release a newer one right after a buy these?

* How does the Mental Ray Users Guide in the online help compare to them, does it cover the same info?

And after I think about all that I don't buy them, but I would if you recommend them.

I you want to take a look. The Programming Mental Ray is availible as a pdf here (http://www.uni-duesseldorf.de/URZ/hardware/parallel/local/softimage/Soft3D_html/mray/_mefirst.htm). Its the Programmers guide version 2.1.

Oh, and theres also a Custom Shader development guide PDF.

hmmm...well the programmer's guide went waaaaay over my head, so I guess I won't be picking up a copy of that one anytime soon. ;) Anybody have any feedback on the other one?

The rendering with mental ray book is absolutely essential. Consider it the formal documentation for mental ray.

I liked "Mental Ray Custom Shaders" DVD as well.
"Mental Ray Users Guide in the online help" is more like a summary of the "Rendering with mental ray".

I also like the mental ray shader examples that comes with Maya6.0
It has tutorials on how to use mental ray shaders in maya. The tutorials are in .html and comes with the matching maya scenes. Each html has "mel link" that you can click on, and it will execute the mel command in the maya scene.
It doesn't list all the shaders, and doesn't give you technical details of each shaders.
But it gives a good start on how to use it inside maya, which can be quite a different matter from how much you know about mental ray shaders.

OK I realise the rendering with mental ray book would be good, but wasnt it written in like 1996 or something. and the pace at which things in this industry are changing, are parts of the book outdated or what?

Rendering with mental ray second edition covers mental ray 3.0. And I highly recommend getting it if you are serious about learning mental ray. I'm sure they will release a new book now that 3.3 is out since it was a rather large update. So you might just want to wait for that, but who knows how long that will take.
